I get this weird painful rash almost instantly after I shave. I looks like a cross between razor burn and acne. The red bumps swell up and get a white head on some of them. Any body get this....or know how to stop it?

Hi,
I also get the same way. I always use a fresh razor, shaving cream, and the warm water of the shower. Nothing helps http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif I've even tried topical solutions that are supposed to help! Well i didn't have any help for you. But i hope it was at least a comfort to know you are not the only one having this inconvenient problem.

I had the same problem a few years back. It was really bad around my knees and I was too embarrassed to wear shorts. Nothing seemed to make it better and it was painful. I finally mentioned it to my doctor and he said it was folliculitis probably due to a staph infection. He prescribed some antibiotics and everything cleared up. It been over 5 years now and I haven't had a problem since. I just wish I hadn't waited so long to ask my doctor about it since it was so easy to clear up.

Use hair conditioner huh? I would think it would clog the blade.

What type of antibiotics did your doctor give you?

My doctor prescribed Bachtroban cream and Augmentin for me to use for a few days. I saw improvements almost immediately. This was not a form of razor burn. I still get razor burn when I shave my bikini area. The rash on my legs and around my knees was actually an infection. My doctor told me to make sure I try to use a new razor, not to share razors, and to be careful about where you leave your razor because this can lead to a staph infection.

Hi rcroe:
Did this rash burn and spread quickly???I had some facial hair due to hormonal problems and used a razor and developed this rash that was so painful and ended up being like open lesions and is taking forever to heal. Doctor diagnosed it as a type of herpes and nurse practioner thought it was similar to shingles but after reading this I wonder if this is what the rash was from. It was just so painful and I am now taking antibiotics for it and it seems to be slowly clearing it up. Looks and feels similar to if you burned yourself and it blistered and broke. Any input will be appreciated.

This does not sound like what I have. Mine hurts and has an itch to it. The red bumps will sometimes swell up to almost dime size and get a white head on them. I thought that it was ingrown hairs at first, but this will happen with in 2-3 hrs after shaving. I have found that "Gold Bond" extra strength powder helps out on the pain.

rcroe-the conditioner actually keeps the razor from getting clogged up-the hair just slides off-believe me it's much better-i hate to shave because it is so painful afterwards-i mean really bad

rcroe, I would really mention this to a doctor. It sounds a lot like my problem and it was easy to clear up. I tried shaving with the conditoner last night like others have mentioned, and I loved it! I barely needed lotion afterwards. it takes only a small amount of the conditioner and the razor glided so smoothly over my skin. That was a great idea.

Lotion makes it worse for me. Maybe I'll try the conditioner thing a shot...heck, can't make it any worse
