Our skin, hair and nails are inherited from our parents. If one of your parents has thin nails, chances are you inherited them. The splitting and peeling are not due to the thickness of your nails, but to the fact that they are dried out. The nail plate is constantly being bathed by a tidal flow of oils and moisture that develop in the nail bed and transmit through the nail plate. Deplenished levels of oils and moisture result in split, peeling brittle nails. Also, if you have your hands in water a lot or use household cleaning solutions without wearing protective gloves, this is another reason for split, peeling nails.
Replenish the oils in the nail plate by applying a ixture of Jojoba Oil and Vitamin E OIl at least twice daily. You can purchase Botanical Oil at any Sally Beauty Supply, or Solar Oil through your local nail salon or from an Ulta Cosmetic outlet nationwide.

It can also be inherited from your Grandparents. Lotion will not do anything for your nails. The molecular structure is much too large to penetrate the skin, much less the nails. All it will do is sit on the surface and you will be wasting your time. Try Botanical Oil from Sally Beauty Supply, or Solar Oil from a local nail salon or from Ulta outlets. Apply at least twice daily and massage into the nails. These oils contain Jojoba and vitamin E along with other conditioning and moisturizing oils. The molecular structure of jojoba is so tiny that it is the only known oil that can penetrate the surface layer of the skin and the nail plate, open up the pores and draw the other oils in after it. If you use it consistently for 1 full month, you will notice a great improvement in your nails. Nothing will make them thicker as the nail plate can only develop so many layers of nail cells and is determined by the length of the matrix. the leading edge of the matrix can be seen as the white half-moon at the base of the nail near the cuticle. The longer the matrix, the thicker the nail plate.
