I often wondered why after a workout, a bike ride, sunning, or even just an overly hot shower, my body itches tremendously. After the shower it is my chest that usually itches,, and after a workout, and bike rides, it is usually my legs majorly and slightly my scalp. I have long been told that it is the toxins being released thru your pores,,,,,and Ive also been told that it is nothing more that your nerve endings being more stimulated.

Prickly heat?
hardcoredummy
05-02-2002, 01:09 AM
It's the heat trying to escape from your body, but your pores aren't fully opening for it to sweat out. If i'm correct, you only get itchy at the point just before you fully break out into a sweat... but once you do, you don't itch, right? If that's the case, then this is the reason.
Cause and treatment? I have no idea. Just try breaking into a sweat or cooling yourself down asap. Might be some sort of vitamin deficiency. I haven't had this problem in about 10 years (when i was a teen i did), but i once did (and i use to hardly ever perspire).

I know what you are all talking about and I know how to solve the problem because I used to have it. By the grace of god I was given the answer. Put a heater and a small humidifier in your bedroom. Warm up the temperature in your room when you sleep and make it humid. For a week or so it might hurt but once your pores open up from the humidity your problem will be solved forever. Try to keep warm after the problem goes away or it will come back.

I have this same problem right now.
Its mainly my face that gets itchy and red when its hot/humid outside or when I get nervous/embarassed. My face feels a lot better when its cold/cool, but when its hot, its starts to itch.
If I get a heater and humidifier, wouldn't that just make it itch more?

i have always wondered about this-i usually don't sweat so i thought it was probably because of that reason-i can remember going to the lake and getting so hot-and my back would itch so bad-and i mean bad-i would take a towel and rub it until my skin was red-i quit going to the lake because of it-i just don't sweat like other people-could this have something to do with it

i think to be sure try doing some really hard exercise like a long run, what often happens with me is i'm fine for about 5 minutes then i'll start getting all itchy but if i run through it after another 5 minutes and when im sweating alot i dont itch. However what really annoy me is if i get suddenly hot, like if i walk into a hot place i'll just start itching. Anyway been 2 days with the whole humid thingy, and basically i cant really sleep coz i keep itching i hope this works.

I have very similar symtom.
But, isn't the first sensation, when it comes, prickly feeling rather than itchy? For me, it's prickly first time, and it becomes itchy. It happens very quickly and very prickly...like pocking the skin with a needle.
The place it happens is usually my back and chest. Sometimes, my face. I found that it gets worse when I'm warm or hot. So, heater or hot water shower makes it worse. I searched internet, and I found out something similar. It's a rare form of hives "cholinergic urticaria" Doctors say it's not really as serious as allergy; just annoying.
But, I'm not sure if this is what I have since I really don't get any red spots when this occurs...maybe I should try getting excessive sweat, as the pre-poster here mentioned.

Yes rianny this is what happens to me, the prickly thing and my doc said the same thing to me....how annoying is that. I mean its serious because once it happened while i was driving which is really dangerous thankfully i was able to pull over but i drive with the window open all the time now. But so far i dont know if the humid thing is working but its hell getting to sleep in that atmosphere. Will keep you all up to date.

What did your doctor do for you?
I know that there are several anti-histamine pills that work very well with this. I also know that they can be taken safely since they have almost no side effects.
I'll ask my doc for treatment next time I visit him.

I get this too, but not all the time. I thought it could be to do with eating hot spicy food, thought it could be the acids from the chilis irritating the pores as sweat is released, but it doesn't seem to coincide with eating hot spicy food. I think mine is caused when my skin is overly dry. The sweat could be coming through and making the skin crack slightly around the pores. It feels like there are a thousand tiny needles pricking me. Try using a moisturizing cleanser or shower gel, and maybe start taking some cod liver oil tablets to keep your skin "greased" as cod liver oil is good for the skin.

Well my doc just said there was nothing he could do. What anti-histamine pills are you referring to Rianny i could ask my doc for them if they work.
Also i take multi-vitamins and cod liver oil tabs everyday. And i do use baby lotion everyday after i shower too. I have healthy skin, i just wished this damn Chloinergic Urticaria would just go. It did say it starts at around 16 and can lasts avg around 7.5 years but at most up till your 30. Well mine started at 16 and seen as im 20 now i'm hoping i only got 3 years left because this will stop me doing my job if it lasts longer than when im 25. Im in medical school so this will stop me doing what i've always wanted.

My skin used to hurt terrible after showering or sweating. It itched and felt as if there needles diggin into my skin. My mom is a waitress, and one day at work she was talking to a customor about how I felt. She said "in the old days" they would test for animea<spelling? by if the skin itched. I started taking an iron vitamin once a day. I found it really helped! This might work for you so give it a try!

God!! I'm glad I found out there are others like me out there, I will tell you how it effects me. My itching started when I was in my early 20's and I am now 38 and I have found when I've been in the ac too long or too many days, when I decide to go out in the heat and humidity I get itchy to the point it drives me stark raving nuts, Or if I get nervous wich in turn causes us to heat up and sweat a lil, I refer to it as the ants are biting and its not just limited to one area its my legs, back, butt, arms everywhere, and I'ts emmbarising in public, these symptoms come and go and like some of the articles say and I have found to be true, If you go outside and just bare it and allow your self to get hot and start to sweat it will pass and does pass and I find if I do it on a regular basis once in a while, then if I have a few days in doors with the ac blowing on me when I retreat back out doors it doesnt happen, but it seems to be only when I've been laid up for a while. I chaulk it up for me as having severe dry skin and lack of water cause all I do is reach for is cokes and maybe the toxins in your sweat are trying to get out and when you dont sweat they dont escape till you do sweat.
If no one knows for sure what causes this then we need to ask our selves these questions and try to come up with a solution, I feel its a simple solution.
I Really feel that the cause is toxins that cant exscape when we dump them in our bodies and dont get them out by sweating once in a while and drinking water to cleanse ourselves.
1: do you drink enough pure water?
2: do you have dry skin?
3: do you stay indoors often or too much?
Kevin

Wow... i have this condition too, and i can say for sure that i don't have eczema... that was the first diagnosis.. after that.. it was all sorts of things.. i have just recently started looking into this form and it makes perfect sense.... i currently take two allegra and one singular per day... and it helps a lot.. especially with the quick onset reactions.. i have had this disorder for at least 12 of my 18 years and it shows no signs of stopping ,hey i have even been to the ER for it. kevin, that point you make is a very good on but for me it doesnt take the cake totally... sure those things aren't helpful.. but i dont belive that it would cure me to live out doors.... just make me miserable....any thoughts anyone? how do yo deal with it?

I am relieved to find this thread as most of the info I've been seeing on the web names hives and visible rashes as part of the itching. I have neither and I have had a hard time convincing family members how much this is affecting my life. I take lukewarm showers (i used to take scalding hot showers), no baths at all, I don't exercise very much anymore (don't even go to my gym that i pay for every month), I carry an umbrella around to shade myself in the heat (I feel like a wierdo),and so on ,and so on. I will start trying antihistimines as a previous person recommended.

Hey everyone
Glad I found this forum- I have been having the exact same problems- how could I go to the doctor and try and explain that I get itchy when I sweat or get nervous. Its very strange. It does not happen all the time, although I have recently found that it has started again. I get itchy all around my neck, and over my face, and sometimes upper body when I exercise and start to sweat. It does not last for long, but I look strange when I have to keep scratching myself. On other occasions, like having a bath, my face gets itchy.
Does anyone have a definitive answer for stopping this?? :bouncing:
Thanks

Wow, I have been having this trouble now pretty bad for a month or two constantly and about 2 years off and on. I never knew what it was called and if it was an actual medical condition. It pretty much only happens to me on my face where I apply Differin acne gel. So my forehead, area around my nose, and upper lip constantly get the itching, hot feeling. Now I just went to the doctor this past week for my acne, he told me to start putting the Differin on my back and chest to clear it up. Now those areas get an intense itchy feeling whenever I do any physical activity or get stressed out. Now I constantly stress out when I am in public because I am so self-concious about this on my face, which causes me to get hot and have these embarrasing red blotches on my forehead and around my nose. Do you think all of this will go away once I stop using my Differin acne med? I have been using it for about 4 years now and didn't experience these until about 2 years ago, and now especially here during winter (COLD in michigan, but hot air indoors) it gets really bad. Sorry for rambling on but I just want to know what you guys all think about this, since I just discovered that there are actually others like me who suffer from this. Thanks all.

omg i cant belive this im not the only 1. well this thing i dont really no what it is. but its pretty bad. i guess iwas 1 of the unlucky people who got it. its takin over my life. for example i was at work today and i spilt mop water cuz i was in a hurry i got nervious as hell and my whole body started itching like crazy its really hard for me to work because when we are in a rush and we have to make sandwhiches i get hot and sooooooo itchy i just start to itch all over. and i talke d to a docter but those indian doctors just nod there heads and act like they now whats going but they said they dont no whats wrong. they gave me some cream but belive no luck. oh i had some luck in trying to cure myself. i went down to the local walgreens and got some of the offbrand bendryl and it worked like a charm i didnt have any drowseness and i felt fine for about 4 hours then i had to pop another when i got hott again. well after seeing that this helped i went down to the allergy and asthma clinc becuase i do have allergies to a lot of things. im going to start getting my allergy shots again and hoping that this will help me. i also read about what others have said and i think it could be because i havent been drinking water recently ever since i got a job i have just been drinking coke after coke after coke so i keep water by my bed now so i can drink. and now thinking i dont ever sweat i use to play football last year and never sweat but i also never had thhttp://www.healthboards.com/boards/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=2254957#

I have been suffering with this for the last 5 years or so along with alot of other problems and yes mild acne is one of them.
http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?p=2393439
It first started when I was 15.
I was a typical lively happy teenager. Played lots of sports, loads of confidence, outgoing, happy etc...
...until it started. I had to give up all sports, stayed indoors, lost my confidence, became shy and depressed. So far only thing the doctor can prescribe is anti-histimines.
When I get hot/stressed it starts, ALL over my body face included. My skin turns red and looks HORRIBLE :o I don't get any hives as such, but the prickling/stinging is unbearable! While im typing this post I can feel it biting me. I find it really hard to live a normal life with it constantly on my mind.
The only thing I have left is hope that one day it will all go away. I'm 21 now and I feel like i've lost 5 years of my life.

Cholinergic Urticaria
I was diagnosed... but there is no real cure, I'm taking zyrtec.
I suggest that you see your favorite allergist about your condition, it was much more productive than the dermatologist... and family MD... Good luck!

I noticed you guys havent followed up on your cases and Im interesed to see what you did to recover. I have the exact problems... Main spots are my chest, back and side on my head.
For my chest I have tried powder but I sweat so much it overwhelms the powder. My back i dont know what to do I just tell my gf to deep scrub my back in the shower. The side of my head is bad. I cannot have pinchable hair at all on the sides because of the itchyness so I get a haircut every week that is 0 faded on the sides.
My doctor said the soap I use it too strong I should use dove or some milder brand.
You guys are right when I used to take Claritin daily I recall the itchyness disappearing but it gets expensive. I have tried taking dead cold showers and it helped a little.
I am 32 years old and have had this problem for as long as I remember. I never really thought about it when I started to sweat and itch I just thought I was a sweaty person and accepted it but I would be a very happy person if it went away.
Any help will be appreciated
