I have one finger (well, technically two, because it's on both of my index fingers) that when it grows, it curves downward. Not the whole nail equally, but medially, the part towards my thumb, that half more-so, tends to tip in and downwards.
I have tried all sorts of things -- I tried fake nails thinking if I could get the acrylics to keep the nail lifted off the bed while it grew, that the natural nail would "learn" a new growing pattern to make it grow flatter like the rest of my fingernails. I've tried clipping them shorter to the quick figuring if it has to "start over" that maybe it would grow normally. I have also tried to make an effort to several times a day, clean the underneath to make sure nothing is collecting to affect the growth.
Granted I think those index fingernails have done this as long as I can remember, so trying to change it now is probably not going to happen. But when it does grow out, one side will grow out ahead of the other side of the nail, so it's crooked.
Very odd.
Anyone know how or even if this can be corrected?

The way the nail grows is determied by the amount of new cells that develop in the matrix. If one side of the matrix was damaged in some way (this can also be genetic) then that portion will not be able to develop the correct amount of nail plate cells and the nail will be misshapen. Also, the curvature of the nail is determined by the shape of the underlying fingertip bone.
