When I was at a guitar competition, the judge said that he would like to see my nails out for picking. I have done that in the past, only to find that they are like paper, they bend and break with a slight touch. I told him this, and he said that if one of his breaks, he puts acrylic on the tip...what exactly does that mean?

What he meant was that he has an artificial nail applied, or an artificial overlay that is an acrylic product. Many guitar players have acrylic applied to their 'playing' hand so they do not have to use guitar picks. Just call your local nail salon, or ask a friend which nail salon is best, and go try it. You only need to apply to your playing hand/fingers.
