I have semi short hair down to my chin actually. My hair is extremely thick, brittle, frizzy dry hair. I've tried several shampoos and conditioners but nothing seems to work. I hate having to blow dry my hair every day to make my hair look smooth. Is there anything that will work on my hair so I don't have to blow dry my hair. Eventhough with the Revostyler it only takes me 35 mintues, but I just hate putting that heat on my hair everyday. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!

P.S. My friend says I look like I have an alley cat on my head. PLEASE HELP!!!

Try back to basics Ginger therapy shampoo and conditioner. It is good for dry frizzy hair. AG shine serum is also good. back to basics raspberry almond conditioner is also good.

I agree, a conditioner is also very important. You might want to opt for deep conditioners.

Aveda brilliantine conditioner and Back to Basics Sunflower conditioner are great.

Also try a hot oil treatment before you wash your hair.

The products I mentioned in my last post will make your hair, very easy to style, shiny and sleek. Good Luck!

Ive read up on jojoba oil, you can use it as a hot oil as well. Just type in jojoba oil in any search bar and it will bring up random sites.

Have you thought about getting a straight perm? It'll cost you....anywhere from $150-$500, depending where you get it. Just so you know, if you happen upon a place that DOES charge as little as $150, that doesn't mean they'll turn your hair into crap. I paid that little and my hair is moviestar shiny & straight. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
I had it done 7 months ago and it's still holding up! I had your type of hair.... now I don't even need a blowdryer or anti-frizz balm.

Thanks guys. I've heard about the thermal reconditioning where they somehow steam your hair, or something like that and it lasts up to 6 months I've also heard that it starts at $300, but i think it would be worth it. I'm just gonna wait until I get thru with my son's and my medical problems, but I'm gonna try it. Thanks starlitgem. Just one question, It doesn't mess it up when you wash your hair? Ok maybe 2 questions, Is there a special shampoo/conditioner I will have to use after I get it done?

Thanks

Hi, sorry I took so long to reply.

It doesn't mess up when you wash your hair and you don't need special conditioners or shampoos.

The only thing you have to follow is: right after you get the straightening done, you can't wash your hair for 2 days to a week, depending on what your particular salon tells you.
After that ordeal is over, you can go back to shampooing and conditioning like usual.
I never needed to blowdry my hair after I had the straightening done, but I did have to comb my hair straight when it was wet to get the desired effect. Basically, the Thermal Reconditioning makes it so your hair dries however it's set when it's still wet. So if you tie it up in a pony tail while it's wet, it will leave a bump where the elastic was. And if you just let it air dry without combing it, it will dry with little pieces sticking out here and there and maybe even a little textured...just like how it was when it was wet. So if you comb it stick straight it will dry stick straight.
If you mess up in the morning (like you didn't have enough time to comb your hair properly for whatever reason) then you can just pat it or mist it with water and comb it through later on and it'll be stick straight again.

TR is amazing. My hair is naturally straight and frizzy..... no amount of blow drying and straightening serum could make it look as polished as they appear in magazines.

When you first get it done, it's obvious. It looks as if you ran a straightening iron through your hair, which might seem suspicious to coworkers seeing you 8am in the morning. But after about a month when your other natural straight hair starts to grow out, it'll look less straight ironed and more "natural."
It's been 8 months since I had it done and I love running my hands through the pin-straight strands. My hair is a little bumpy where the roots have grown out but it isn't noticeable. The healthy, glowing straightened parts of my hair are weighing down the frizz on top so it looks smooth all over. Not to mention that the hair on the top of my head truly is virgin hair. I haven't brought a blow dryer or a straight iron or any other store bought products to the roots. It's so healthy and luxurious.

It might seem pretty damn vain but it's well worth it!

starlitgem - was your hair colour-treated before you got TR done? How long is your hair? And where did you find it for $150? I live in Canada and the cheapest I've found anywhere around here is starting at $300!!

Hey Starlitgem,

You know you are doing a very good job in convincing me to get this done. You should be a rep for Tr http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I checked out the website you mentioned but San Antonio wasn't on the list. I think the closest was Houston or Dallas and since I have friends there I can go over on a weekend and have it done. I also would have to call around to the Salons to make sure they have the TR.

That was a good question SobeStar brought up. I thinking about dying my hair because my "stress" grey hairs are starting to show and I'm only 29!!!! AHHHH!!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif

You guys take care

Marie

I think the only problem is highlighting or bleaching your hair. You can completely dye it but the problem with bleach is it breaks down the strands and it will take longer for the unbleached hair to straighten and somehow there's a problem with that. I had it done when my hair was virgin so I can't totally answer this.
I just had my hair highlighted and I'd like to keep it that way. I hope there won't be any problems for when I need to get it straightened again.

As for price and length.... I think they charge according to how difficult it would be for them to straighten. I have straight coarse frizzy hair that was 2 inches past my shoulders and they charged $160 (excluding tip). There was another girl getting it done the same time as me....she had chin length cork screw curly hair and they charged her $180 even though it took the same amount of time to get my hair done. With corkscrew curls it's harder on you because you might need to go back every 6 weeks for touchups. :/ If you have the money, then hey. But for us mere mortals...

The reason I paid so little was because the salon didn't use those famous highly acclaimed straightening chemicals. I'm sure the chemicals my salon used were a lot harsher and maybe even a little unsanitary. But it doesn't show....my hair looks identical to the girl in my class that paid $400 for hers. The high end prices are usually for assurance.

But it does take at least 6 hours to get it done..... that's also why ritzy salons will charge about $600-$800. Think about it....they charge $75-$320 (depends on salon) for each haircut. They make about $75-$320 an hour per haircut. So those salons seem to be more or less charging TR by the hour. If someone has that kind of money to blow they would probably feel safer having a stranger run harsh chemicals through their hair for hours at a well known salon than at a hole-in-the-wall barbershop in a scary neighborhood (where I had mine done).
I paid $160 for the bad atmoshphere and unqualified people. It's OK though because my hair came out looking fab. It's been 8 months and it hasn't fallen out yet. I took this risk b/c I knew a friend who had it done there and she couldn't stop singing the praises.
I think you can usually find cheaper TR in a predominantly Asian neighborhood. I had mine done in an industrial neighborhood in Queens....away from the posh sterility of Manhattan--hence the $160 pricetag. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm getting it done. One problem though, I let go of my sugardaddy.. dang http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif
Well, I'm calling around but so far, I haven't had any luck. I'll still keep trying. I wish you guys could see my hair it's semi-short with big waves.

Thanks for everything sarlitgem.

hey...if you want to condition your hair and not lay down all that money just yet, you can get olive oil, sesame oil or coconut oil and put it in your hair. wrap it up, leave it on as long as you can (overnight maybe) and wash out. you're gonna have to wash your hair a few times but you'll definitely start to see and feel a difference. i do it a few times a month. people can definitely see a difference.

also, if you're thinking of getting thermal reconditioning done, it can get real expensive. i live in new york so that's why i say this. there's also a process similar to TR called the korean magic perm. it's technology is very similar to TR (which is japanese) and it's been around longer so it's cheaper. in ny, TR can cost about $150/hr and it can take as long as 7 hours. i had a friend who had KMP done and it took her 7 hours b/c she has very curly hair and it cost her $350 and her hair looked remarkable. i had no problem finding a salon that did this in ny but you may have to do some research to find a place where all you guys live. hope i helped http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Mindfunkie,

I saw something similar at a Sally's Beauty Shop. It was a do-it yourself TR but i'm very clumsy to do it myself. I'm gonna check with Sally's to see if they still have that product. The only bad part is that every time I go to Sally's I end up spending more that $100 on products when I can use that money on something more productive. Hey!! I'm a sucker for things. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/tongue.gif I'll try the oils you mentioned for a couple months and see what happens. Now if I can do something about my acne http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif It's not that bad but they have their moments.

Thanks again.

Jojoba oil is one of those great oils for the hair, you will definitely see a difference, AND it is also very good for the skin - there are a few people on this board currently using jojoba for their acne!

Specifically which places are recommended in NYC and Queens to have the Japanese Hair Straightening process or a similar process done?

As for the do it yourself thermal recondioning...i did it myself and paid about $50 for the solution plus a ceramic iron, and I still have half of the solution left to do regrowth when I see fit..

Don't be scared...I was scared too, but the proccess is relatively easy. I got a pretty decent ceramic iron off ebay for like $25 and I used Jheri Redding Thermal Ionic system that I got off the net.

Just be sure you have a couple of friends to help with the proccess!

good luck

Jojoba oil is very nice, but there's a better, cheaper alternative. Just go to your grocery store and buy a bottle of safflower oil. Put about three or four drops on your hands and rub them (enough to give your hands a light shine). Scrunch this into your hair before bed and when you wake up, just use some cold water to get rid of the oily residue. This will leave your hair very soft!

As far as shampoo and conditioners go, I have dry, coarse, frizzy hair, and the only thing I've found that does anything is Redken's All Soft line. They even have this new spray conditioner (it's rather expensive, but supposedly you can get away with five shampoos before using it again). Apparently, this "Addictive Hair Treatment" spray uses a nano-technology, which makes the spray so fine that it penetrates the cuticles of your hair and softens the hair from the inside out. I have not used it yet (it's about $15 for a small spray bottle). But I'm planning on trying it out. My hair is all sorts of crazy if I don't use Redken. It's tight and barely moves at all. And if I don't apply a leave-in conditioner or some sort of cream, it looks like I have a halo around my head, as the hair puffs up and looks like -- as you said, like an animal was sitting there. Redken discontinued the All Soft Moist Ends, which pisses me off, because that was great stuff.

thanks guys for everything. I've been using Paul Mitchel's Tea Tree or something like that and it feels good. I'm also using a flat iron with ceramic plates and man does it makes my hair strait. Right now in Texas we have about 99-100% humidity and when I go outside my hair doesn't get into a knot it stays straight. I will still try the oils you guys have recommended.

Take care everyone

Regarding dry, brittle, frizzy hair. First of all what state do you live in? I live in Florida and use to have the same problem. I spent hundreds on dollars on salon products to combat this problem. Then I read this piece on a hair site about special hair vitamins and that they are a waste of money. All you need to take as far as vitamins goes are "One a Day" for women. I started taking them and in about 2 months my hair started to transform! It has grown faster than ever. It's silky, shiny and bouncy. I know it's the vitamins. The shampoo that I use is Treseme' deep clean with vitamin C and Treseme' conditioner with vitamin E from good old Walgreens at $4.00/bottle. That's it, I can even go one day without washing my hair and it looks great. I also have to blow dry my hair straight. But, I can even leave it curly and it looks great. HOORAY for ONE A DAY!
Try one bottle, that's all it took for me.
Hope this helps.
Have a great day.

you should try the "oleo relax" line from Kerastase. They have a sampoo, a mask, and a serum for everyday use. In addition, you should use Phytodefrisant from Phyto. That is a product that I can't live without. It makes the hair straight and keeps it like that for days. These are not cheap, but a little goes a long way. Let me know if you need input on where to get them and how much they cost. Be my guest because I am very familiar with them. Good Luck :-)

While it probably isn't very good for the condition on hair, John Frieda's temporary relaxing serum works very well to straighten out my hair for a day. It only lasts a day unfortunately. I just bought Frieda's Frizz-ease Hair Serum which you coat over your hair while its soaked after shampooing and conditioning. I'll let ya know how that works.

If you don't really care about straightening your hair out, Umberto Giannini makes a Sleek & Chic Blowdry Cream which claims to straighten hair and make it sleek. It doesn't really straighten it, but it makes my hair silky soft and very manageable. I haven't found anything that works as well. You just apply it to towel-dried hair and blowdry. You don't even need to blowdry, but if you want straight hair, it's recommended. You won't see results for about five or ten minutes, which is unusual, but after that, I have the softest hair. It's really nice.

I have naturally straight hair except for a cowlick--right in the front. It's the worst place for a cowlick really. If I grow my hair out to a medium length, the very front part of my hair just gets this irritating and unappealing wave. I wish there were a way to fix that permanently, but I guess it's genetic. The Frieda relaxer stuff works very well to fix the problem temporarily--so it depends on what you want: Relaxer for straight, gloss drops for shine, or Sleek & Chic for soft and silky. Hmm... what if I use all of these products at once?! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Gals,

Just letting you all know I'm going for the TR tomorrow and am extremely excited. My hair is thick and very frizzy, and not to mention uncontrollable.

I will let you all know how it went.

I'm having it done in the city in Sydney and got quoted $AUS470-$AUS500.

Let you know..... http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Starlitgem,

I went for a consultation at Paul LeBrecque for TR and was told I was not a good candidate for it since my hair is so dry. A friend of mine told me they are just very conservative there. I was wondering about the place where you went for yours. Was your hair really dry and brittle, or just curly. I still really want to do it, and don't feel like I need ambiance or hand holding, just a recommendation from someone with similar hair. (I live in NY too.)

thanks so much!

if you blow dry your hair everyday, I suggest Thermsilk. Its cheap and is heat activated to protect hair from the heat damages

Hi Guys,

Just reading through the postings here... I forgot I posted here so long ago and my last posting said 'I'm going to do the Japanese Reconditionding Treatment'.

Well here I am... a few moths later down the track...

and wish you guys could see me.... hahaaa....

My hair feels great, still straight and still love running my fingers through it....

My hair was the worst of all kind! And now, it does not even give me any headaches... just use Vita 5 shampoo/conditioner and leave in conditioner. I had a wedding the other week and it looked like I've been to the hairdresser that morning.... It is great and well worth it.

Anyone willing to do it GO FOR IT! U'll never turn back... I think I'm committed to this hair-do for the rest of my life....

I'm glad for you Cheeky, I'm still trying to get my hair done, but practically every salon that i've been to tells me the same thing. I'm not gonna waste my time doing something that doesn't work and that they have other customers. Also that 6 hours is too long to do someone's hair etc., etc.... I'm now using a ceramic flat iron which cost me $158.00 and it does leave my hair good and here in Texas is so humid, my hair doesn't mess up. The only bad thing is that i'm getting tired of getting my scalp burned and getting blisters on my head. My son has gotten his hand burned. He didn't see it when I was doing my hair. Well, guys I'm still gonna look around call around and hopefuly i'll find someone who will do my hair.
