Hi all,
This is only sort of skin related, but I am having trouble finding info and figured this would be a good place to start.
About a month or so ago two things started happening: 1. my legs (below the knee) started getting really itchy due to what looked like insect bites and 2. my sweet little guinea pig started losing fur!
I didn't put together that the two might be related until I did more research on my balding guinea pig and found out that it could be due to some sort of insect pest. I examined her skin more closely and saw what looked like TINY little feces. I bought some puppy flea/tick/bug spray to use on her and within days she started to look better! (Her skin never looked bad....just the hair was falling out)
But I'm still chewed up.
I think that whatever she had is getting at me and I don't know what to do about it. I feel like I should spray, but I don't know what kind of spray to use! I know its not fleas - possibly some sort of mite?
FWIW, I did ecological field work this summer on a prairie and am thinking I might have dragged some little pest in with me from the field...I don't know where else the bugs could have come from!
Any ideas on how to insect-rid my apartment?? Or what I can do about these bites on my leg? I'm trying not to itch them but its SO hard...I've used cortizone cream but it doesn't seem to help much.

You might have to call a pest exterminator to come take a look and spray for you. If it is fleas or something similar, they can really get out of control fast and even start to migrate into some of your neighbors' apartments.

You have probably contracted some sort of mite from the field and brought it home. I would see a dermatologist - they can take a scraping from the ksin and look at it under a scope to see what it is. I would also take the guinea pig to the vet to be sure the mite is gone, and clean his house really good!
