My friend has a major sleeping problem. He cannot get up in the morning. He sleeps through his alarm clock, the phone, people comming to the door and some times he doesn't respond to being shaken. He is late to work all of the time and it taking a toll on his work relationships. Can any one offer suggestions? I'm affraid he might loose his job.

go to bed earlier and always get up at the same time? Try this: tell him to tell himself what time he's waking up when he goes to sleep at night. I will say to myself, "I'm waking up in 5 hours, it's 2 AM, that's 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, 5 to 6, 6 to 7. Five hours." And I will generally wake up. Also, I have a REALLY LOUD alarm clock. It's a clock radio you can change the volume on. Get him one of those.
If all else fails, throw a bucket of water over his head at the same time every morning.
P.S. is there any chance he has an emotional problem that keeps him from getting up? He might not be excited about work. Look into that.

Hi, I don't know about this one - it sounds serious to me! He needs a doctor, a specialist!!

Hi, on second thought, I had a friend like that when I was a student. She was at the end of the hall, had 5 alarms clocks, of which to where in cake tins (to increase the noise level). I could here these alarm clocks all the way down the hall. They where all set 5 min. apart. After #5 I'll get up and go and wake her. I had to shake her too. The weirdest of it all was she would not know where she is and if it is night or day. Weird but she was very healty. Some of her other friends tried the glass of water in the face, but I didn't have the heart.
Good luck

He probably has sleep apnea; a condition in which a person quits breathing while asleep. This cause him/her to wake up. It can occur hundreds of times during the night. Your friend should run to the nearest sleep disorder clinic for evaluation. The condition can be successfully treated.
