My 7 year old son suffers from sleep apnea and it worries me a lot ( damage to his heart etc...)but doctors don't seem too concerned about it ( does anyone think they should be)...
He is on a waiting list to have grommets fitted because he has glue ear and they are going to remove his adenoids at the same time (but not his tonsils which I think is odd as they are quite large).
I understand (from using this board) that removing his adenoids will cure his sleep apnea but obviously I'm worried about the general anesthetic risks and also the risk of him developing hypernasal speech as a result of the adenoidectomy.
I know that his glue ear will eventually clear itself up and that the adenoids will shrink on their own so my main reason for going ahead with the surgery was to stop the sleep apnea from causing damage to his heart. Now I have heard of CPAP ( I don't know very much about it though)I am wondering if it's suitable for children and if so why wasn't I offered this ....I am absolutely terrified of my son having surgery :(
Can anyone reassure me or give me advice or anything????? Please??
Thanks...........Margy

Sorry to hear of all the things your son and you are going through. Before the surgery talk to the anethiestiologist(I'm sure I spelled that wrong) tell him your fears, but not in front of the child, I'm sure you know that. :) And yes, ask the doc why the tonsils are to be left in. Maybe it's because it would be to hard on him to have both out at the same time. Express your concern over the hypernasal thing, see what he says. And write down all your concerns and make a copy, give one copy to his nurse and keep one for your own reference, leave some space on your copy to write in the answers to the questions. Hope everything goes OK. When is the surgery? And what the heck is Glue ear, never heard of it? Take care, Diana

sorry to hear about your sons illness .... my baby girl was born at 29 weeks weighing 2lb 4oz , she was diagnosed with chronic lung disease.. after being ventilated she couldnt maintain her oxygen level.. that is when she went on cpap... it is oxygen through a nasal tube but there is no sedation ... my baby was on cpap and dependent for 2 months but i would say there is no need for alarm .. i believe the cpap is a way of the lungs being able to rest, and alot better than being fully ventilated

Thanks for the replies :)
Glue ear is basically fluid in the ear (thick fluid) that stops you from hearing properly.
I will certainly write down all my concerns as suggested. I don't know when surgery is I'm in the UK so here we just have to wait :(

Thanks for telling me about CPAP I'm sorry to hear you daughter had such an awful start in life :(
I'm just curious as to why my doctor never gave me this option seeing as it's a possibility?!?!

It's not easy being a parent at the best of times is it never mind when we have problems like these to deal with?!?!

Anyway thanks for "listening to me" i really appreciate you taking the time to reply to me.

I sure hope you get some answers from your doctor. Glad beps3 had something to share with you. This disorder sounds like enough to worry a parent to death. Maybe you can ask why your doc. didn't try the option that beps said they did for her daughter. Take Care Diana
