I am not depressed and I don't nap. But, because there are on occasion 4am "continual thoughts" going on such as
what I should do the next day, thoughts of the past,
funny things that have happened, etc. , I can't go back to sleep. Even creative thoughts buzzing around.
So I started experimenting how the heck to turn off my brain. Melatonin worked for a VERY long time. Young kids don't have these problems because, as you know, they have Enormous Melatonin production going on.
Unfortunately, I am "hooked" on my nighttime pill regimen: 5mg of Buspar (way beneath therapeutic levels)and 1/2mg of Xanax. This combination serves to put me out, in a very floaty, nice manner each and every night. Then at 4am I have to take 1mg of Xanax to stop the thinking. I sleep like a rock until 7 or 8.
So there is a condition I've seen mentioned ONCE before: an active mind. No; it doesn't serve me well.
Haven't made a DIME yet using it. And I'd like to be abe to stop so I'd feel , er, "normal." Now the entire universe knows my EARLY MORNING DOSAGE SCHEDULE. Just in case everyone thinks that if you can't sleep you need psychiatric help and a heavy drug regimen. Right.

I'm sorry; it's spelled XANAX. sounds like ZAN ax.
Have you never heard of it? It's a very popular,
"addictive" (so opponents of it claim)tranquilizer or
benzodiazepine (like valium but it lasts longer and is much newer). My experiences with it have all been extremely positive. It helps Greatly with insomnia,
nervousness, panic attacks - even irritability.
After you've been taking it for fifteen years (and exercise extreme self control)you learn how many milligrams to take for the desired effect. For instance: before a dental appointment I'll take 2 or 3 milligrams then come home and sleep 2 hrs. But people who have never taken a tranquilizer couldn't do that; they'd pass out in the waiting room or get in a wreck.
Unlike Valium, I never feel nervous or nasty when the effects wear off. Have you never heard of xanax?

I have the same problem. When I try to go to sleep I think of everything under the sun. All stupid trivial things. I have finally found a doctor who understands it's not worry or depression, just as you put it "a happy active mind." I'm taking Ambien now and it's working wonders.

I have a very active mind at night!! I am one of those people that is very reluctant to take medication to make me sleepy...but even when I do take a muscle relaxant it doesn't work that well. I wake up in the middle of the night and out of nowhere a song is formed in my head and I have to write it down. lol...it is so odd, I am very creative in the middle of the night. My mind is active no matter what and I come up with very good songs. Well I am kind of rambling! Have a great night all!

i also "suffer" from a 'happy active mind'. i think about anything and everything...kind of irritating. is there anyway, other than taking medication, to relieve this?
thanks,

meditation works wonders...i know what you are thinking if i have a active mind then how the HECK can i do that...well step by step...the problem is the overacting so you need to stop the overacting and take back the control....one of the reasons why people stay up all the time is because we usually don't have enough time during the day to just breath and stop for a minute....we are always on the go so at night before we go to sleep it when we actually take a break...no wonder your mind is still going it has been trained to do this all day long.......what have you done to relax yourself...i don;t mean sleep but relax.......

I suffer from an active mind as well. I'm wondering if most of you have gone to sleep specialists or a regular Physician? Where should i go? I sleep up to 12 hours a day (when I can) because my mind doesn't let me get into deep REM.

I went to a sleep specialist who then referred me to a sleep center to make sure apnea wasn't the cause. It wasn't it was just my "happy active mind" I know take ambien when needed to fall asleep. Ask your doctor to refer you to a sleep specialist who can take it from there.
