I wake up in the morning with palpitations in my heart, beating extremely rapidly.. Has anyone else experienced this? I now feel extremely tired all day long.. am i not getting enough air? I broke my nose 7 years ago and now it feels like it is occluding one nostril. could this be a factor? Thanks.

Hello,
I wake up with the same problem. I'm now on medication for it and I would get fast heart rate at other times too though.
Even though I'm on meds and they help alot I still wake up with my heart rate a little fast but it doesn't last long.
If you're having problems with one nostril being clogged up it could be due to your heat source or it could be the previous broken nose. I honestly don't know if broken nose would cause clogging ot not.
One tihng I know is I was having terrible clogged up nose and most of it{other than allergies} was attributed to my new oil furnace. The heating people told me the new oil furnaces are the worst because of being so energy efficient. Anyway, I added a humidifier to it and that has helped alot, as for the clogged nose. My DR didn't think my stuffy nose had anything to do with the rapid heart rate though.
If you take any kind of allergy, cold medicine that will make it alot worse, even nasal spray. I found that out the hard way. Caffeine, cigarettes and chocolate don't help either.
If you haven't been to a DR for it you should probably go so they can test you. And they can put you on meds that will help dramatically.
Do you have a way to test to your blood pressure and pulse?

I'm actually a pharmacist and have tried some meds to slow my heart rate..
I have the same problem as you.. my heart rate jumps during the day as well... but then sometimes it will also slow down extremely to the point where it makes me so tired that i will pass out if i'm sitting down, reading, trying to concentrate, etc.
I live in a townhouse, and i'm not sure what kind of heat we have.. but i don't think that is the problem, because now the heat is off and i have the same problems. I do have an anaphylactic allergy to milk, but thats it. I do take claritin once in a while if i think i'm having allergies. I've been trying to stay away from caffeine, i don't smoke, and the chocolate isn't an issue because i'm allergic to milk.
What tests did you have your MD do?
I do test my BP and pulse.. and its strange that sometimes my heart feels like its going extremely fast and my pulse is pretty much normal (~80).
Thank you very much for your reply.

Sometimes I'll feel like it's really fast too but when I check it it will be in the 80 or 90's and that's not that bad. 90's are a little high but nothing to worry about since it can go to 100 without being considered tachycardia.
You may be having the same problem as me. Your heart rate is slower, maybe 50's, 60's then it goes up to 80 or 90 and you notice it even though it's not considered fast. In the morning I feel that way. I'm not sure how fast it really is but it doesn't feel overly fast, maybe less than 100 which isn't bad, it's annoying.
My DR did an EKG, Echo, holtor monitor, thyroid and sugar test and a deficiency test and I also had a chest x-ray prior to this. They can also do stress EKG and stress Echo as well as something called a tilt table test. That's if your pulse is dropping too much and you're fainting, passing, getting dizzy.
Have you tested or been able to test your pulse when you get tired like this to see what it is? I never had that problem thankfully. When it wasn't racing it stayed at about 80 maybe 70 and never went any lower than that. MOstly it stayed faster, in the high 70's and 80's but normal.
Do oyu actually pass out or do you just like you are?
When I complained about my heart racing in the morning{while I'm still in bed} my DR said he'd be more worried if it slowed down rather than speeding up on lying down.
You definitely should seek out a DR, for the peace of mind if nothing else. Even if you don't think you're worrying, you are. Everyone does.
If I hadn't went it would have gotten alot worse. And even when I was in the DR's office waiting to see what the tests said and before that my pulse was high mostly out of worry and when I left the Dr's office and assured I wasn't going to die from it my pulse went down.

Sleep apnea can cause a racing heart upon awakening along with fatigue during the day. Might be worth looking into....

Do you have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea or O. Hypoventilation syndrome? What is your Body Mass Index and neck circumference in inches?

The first thing coming to mind if you are having daytime fatigue and palpitations upon awakening is OSA. The last (and strongest) REM period occurs just before you awaken after a night of sleep. If you have OSA, that last REM usually provokes the worst obstructions and desaturations of the entire night. Some patients awaken from a long obstruction in the last REM with heart racing, feeling palpitations and terrific anxiety. Sometimes those palpitations are bigeminy, trigeminy or a few seconds of V-tach.

Nothing can diagnose the underlying problem as well as an attended sleep study.

You are highly educated and realize something is not quite right. Get on over to an AASM accredited sleep lab in your city. Waiting serves no purpose.

Thanks for all your help.. I'm going to get the referral to get a sleep study and/or an EENT eval for my 'crooked' nose asap.
I'm a small-framed guy (5'8", 145lbs), and i have noticed a slight increase neck size recently.

1 more question: When i wake up after not getting enough sleep, I have a lot of gas in my stomach/intestine.. but it only happens when i get <~6 hours of sleep.. so it is a constant reminder of the nights when i don't sleep enough. It clears relatively quick, and has no odor - it just causes extreme discomfort. Does anyone else have this problem? or a reason why it only happens when i dont' get enough sleep.. ie am i 'swallowing' air early in my sleep cycle which passes if i sleep long enough?
Thanks
