I have been taking one dose of Niquil to help me sleep over the past three years. Does anyone know if this is harmful. I know that it inhibits urination during the night due to the antihistamine. Any other harmful side effects? Would one dose harm one's liver?

My DR told me to use GRAVOL to help sleep. Been taking it for a while now and do not wake up drowsy. Gravol can be bought off the shelf and can get generic brand too for about $2.00 for 100.

Hi,

Gravol is also an antihistamine. Interesting, I've heard of quite a few people who use it to aid sleep.

I can't take a whole one, I get restless legs agitated and feeling quite warm-- making sleep impossible.

The half doesn't really work, but if I take it just before bedtime, it will relax me enough to sleep.

joe59102....many people take antihistamines everynight for allergies, I doubt the nyquil would be too much of a problem. If you don't get enough water, though, I could see a problem. You may want to replenish when you wake-up by drinking one or two good glasses before eating, and then throughout your waking hours.

Are you on other medications as well what could interact with antihistamines?

One consideration for you....there is Tylenol and other stuff in it. The other ingredients may be a problem (tylenol to liver). Do you think you could do less than one dose? It may be enough for you to fall asleep but the other ingredients would be less.
Also, you could check what the antihistamine is, and just purchase it separately. The dosage would have to be the same or less, though, it probably would take longer for you to fall asleep because of the absorbtion.

Good sleep to you,
quincy

Scroll down to the antihistamine section. It does give the long-term side-effects. I would assume this list relates to overuse (now what that exactly means...once a day/night, twice, more??). Still something to keep in the back of your mind if you are feeling them.

I went down to the drugstore today and tried to purchase Gravol but, apparently, it's not sold in the USA under that name. The pharmacist gave me Dramamine instead. He said that it contained the same ingredients. The price was hefty however. $4.95 for twelve tablets. I found a generic brand however. It was $2.13 for twelve tablets. Still spendy but better. I will try it tonight. Should I try just one tablet tonight?

I think it might be the combination of the alcohol and the antihistamine that makes Niquil so affective and seductive. I have tried to take an antihistamine alone and it hasn't worked that great.

Unfortunatly NyQuil has the opposite effect on me. When I take it for a cold it makes my heart race... Pretty scary stuff
