I have been a terrible insomniac all my life. I can remember lying in bed as a child ... not being able to sleep.
About a year ago I read that magnesium helps. I am still amazed that this simple, inexpensive mineral helps me so much. I have slept more in the past year than ever!

When I first started taking it I couldn't beleive how sleepy I would get. Combine it with exercise and I really get sleepy.
I never had a problem before but magnesium also helps to relax me.

I've tried magnesium and I still didn't sleep. Maybe I didn't take the best amount or take it at the right time of day. How much do you take? When do you take it? Before bed with meal.....?? Thanks, Arctic Loon

I find that Valerian helps me get a better sleep, when I sleep. Relax and Sleep has Valerian in it and works too.

I've tried Magnesium, also, although I haven't noticed any effect. I wonder if one particular type of magnesium is more effective? There are so many forms available... magnesium stearate, magnesium glycerate, magnesium citrate, magnesium oxide, magnesium aspertate, magnesium chelate, just to name a few... Anyone tried Natural Calm? I had a trial packet from my massage therapist over a year ago; it was a powder you dissolve in warm water. I haven't been able to find it in any stores near me (I live in Maryland). I'd love to find something that would help me sleep, besides trazodone and neurontin...

Hi, DariusTDog. Just wanted to let you know that Natural Calm has a website where you can order it. The product description makes it seem like it gives you energy instead of helping you sleep or calming you, but if it worked for you then that's great. I'm always looking for sleep/anxiety ideas.

I take Lactate Magnesium and it definately helps. It says its for nerves, sleep disorders and a substitute when weaning off stronger stuff.

Watch your magnesium intake. Too much can cause bad reactions. There's a herb by Nutrilite called Valerian Hops...all natural and it helps you sleep! Check it out on the web!

I bought liquid combination of magnezium and calcium.
One teaspoon is recommended. I suppose it's ok but I don't know if it is enough.

Valerian Root works really well for me. When I started taking it, I only took one pill without reading the directions. Then, I read the directions and it said to take 3 and up to 6 if you want a deeper sleep. So, I took 4, along with 1 melatonin and was amazed at how well I slept. Pretty close to 7 hours, which for me is like an eternity.

The best form of magnesium to take is magnesium citrate. Many supplements use magnesium oxide which is one of the most poorly absorbed forms. Recommended daily allowance is about 400mg. Maybe 350mg for women. I'm not exactly sure but this information can easily be found doing a search. Most Americans do not eat the proper amount of magnesium in their diets and may unknowingly suffer from magnesium deficiency. The effects of taking too much magnesium are much the same as you would experience with magnesium deficiency. Alcoholics tend to be much more magnesium deficient because it is depleted with the alcohol in their system.
I discovered magnesium supplementation while searching for the cause of my eyes twitching. I've been taking it for some time now and my twitch is gone, thank goodness, because my vision was becoming slightly impaired. Anyways, I would definitely recommend it as it also relaxes me and I feel it has had positive effects in other areas of my life.
