For a non-drug solution, try my special meditation technique:
1) Make yourself perfectly comfortable in bed, in your favorite position (on your stomach, or your back, or your side, whichever is best.)
2) Once you are in this position you CANNOT MOVE. (or at least do your best not to move, that means no scratching your nose, wiggling your legs, etc.)
3) Begin breathing in a relaxed, regular pattern
4) Every time you breath out count, starting at 1 and trying to reach 100
5) Every time you lose count and your mind starts drifting, start all over again
Let me know if this works. You should fall asleep before you ever reach 100, unless of course you are extremely hyper. It helps if you've exercised that evening and are physically tired, otherwise you might get restless.

I'd like to suggest either melatonin, 5-htp or tryptophan an hour or so before bed. Also take calcium, magnesium (1200 mg). Also try digestive enzymes. I read that a lack of Invertase also called sucrase can cause insomnia. I can't tell you where to get these things as I'd have to post URLS and that's a no no on this board. Read everything you can on the internet about melatonin, 5-htp, trytophan, calcium, magnesium and digestive enzymes. You should definitely exercise 3 or 4 hours or more as much as possible before bed. Pray your heart out. May God help you.

Your problem probably came about because you found it hard to go to bed straight after working and you were still in busy mode from work, and then when you coudn't sleep easily you got worried about it and went to bed worrying you wouldn't sleep easily and there you are, you accidently created a habit and you now need to reprogram yourself.
The problem of the vivid dreams may be that when you go short of sleep you usually get more REM or dreaming sleep as you are catching up on it. So don't worry about that:)
finding a way of dealing with thoughts going round and round would really help you. I have dealt with that problem (most of the time, LOL) by giving myself a strict rule that when I go to bed i will NOT think about anything in my everyday life, and instead I have set up a series of relaxing themes. i imagine myself lying on a warm sandy beach, for instance, but to help me wind down and relax I imagine walking along a quiet grassy path towards the beach, and i imagine i feel realy tired and long to lie down and relax. It always works, UNLESS...I allow myself to think about life even once, then i have had it! It is all about self discipline, LOL!
Another thing that helps is to 'tidy up' your thoughts well before bed time. Try not to go round in circles, but carry each thought, one at a time, through to some sort of resolution. if you have managed to tidy away the thought, that is wonderful, if you can't resolve it, write it down and tell yourself you will work on it the next morning, then let go of it for the evening.
On a practical level, try to be relaxed and slow moving as bed time approaches, if you rush around you will stir up your body and it won't be able to let go and sleep.
I fully understand you don't want meds, what a wise girl you are:) You may feel that homeopathic remedies (which can't hurt you) are OK to take and if so, there are specific sleeping remedies that are entirely safe and free from side effects, or homeopathic Coffee could help, as it cures like with like, and coffee causes the symptoms you want to cure!
Don't eat too close to bed time, well, certainly not a lot! Don't forget drinks like cola have usually got caffeine in them, and sinus meds often have ephedrine in them that also wake you up.
if you are used to not being able to sleep before say, three in the morning you won't be able to get to sleep much earlier immediately, you will need to work back slowly. The body is such a creature of habit, and likes to sleep at the same time each night. Or even a little later each night, as most of us would have a 25 hour day if we were free to. if you sleep badly a regular routine is most helpful, a relaxing and winding down time and then bed at the same time each day will help you.
Good luck!

When I was around your age I started having problems sleeping. The thing that helped me is getting a radio and a pillow speaker. I started listening to talk shows to get my mind off what was bothering me and I started falling asleep after 30 minutes. It's been 30 years but it still helps me to go to sleep and when I wake up I turn the radio on again and it helps put me back to sleep.

Texas Angel, I have just stumbled upon a disorder called delayed sleep phase syndrome, it is pretty normal in adolescence but can carry on.
The cure is full spectrum light therapy to reset the body clock! just sleeping with the curtains open so that early morning sun falls into the bedroom can help.
Or/and light boxes can be used. early morning is when to do this, it seems.
