Hey all. I just had a quick question. I smoke cigarettes...usually Marlboro Reds or lights or whatever my friends have while I'm with them. I've only really been smoking for a year and a half...and I only smoke when I have some cigs which hasn't been too often lately. My question is: every now and then...maybe 1-2 times a week (just an estimate) I will start coughing and it is a deep cough. And it's like there is something in my throat but there isn't. Sometimes I end up coughing for up to 5-10 minutes. Could this be from smoking even though I've only been smoking for a year and a half? My dad made a comment to me yesterday that maybe I should see a doc because I cough a lot and it's a deep cough like something might be wrong (he doesn't know I smoke). What could this be? I want to quit smoking and I believe I will, but what do you all think this is? Thanks to anyone who will take the time to respond! I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again and God bless.

Ashlee,

Whether you smoke or not, a persistent cough is something that should be checked out by a doctor.

Thanks...but do you have any idea what causes the deep cough I have? I never had it until I'd started smoking...so I'm guessing that's it considering I'm pretty healthy...I think lol :) Thanks for the help any other replies would be great, too. Take care.

Ashlee,

I smoked a pack a day for 18 years and never had a deep cough. Only a doctor can tell you what's causing it.
