I suppose there are hundreds of people like me here and do I need help, a little about myself : I am a 55 year old full time grand mother, student, mom to three, single and happy in my life BUT I have survived several cancers of my nasal pharnyx, have a heart condition, walk 4-5 miles a day, watch my diet don't drink(anymore!)and smoke like a tilt and it seems I will never quit I can say I like to smoke most days but now I am smoking in bed <burn't my new sheets last night and I wonder how long it will take me before I burn me.
Is there anyone here who was as bad a smoker as I am and have quit??because if there is I sure will listen to anyone who can offer me some help. Oh I forgot I also have emphysema now as well and also my mom died with lung cancer and I took care of her at home for 10 months and she did not die a very pretty death so if that soesn't scare me what does it take? Anyone???

Dear One: I hear you. Please calm down and listen to what you are saying. "Make me quit." I can't. You have to start. I can't make a baby walk until it gets up on its feet and wants to walk. You have to start. Somewhere deep it sounds like you are saying "Double Dare you Death." Somehow you need to take that determined NOT QUIT and reverse it to determined TO QUIT. It's there, it's angry...and it just needs to come out in reverse.
Wanna quit with me? We could practice (like not having a cig before or in bed). What would work for you and I? Eating, drinking a glass of water, sleep aids???? What are some of you ideas. Read my message under MaMaMia. You like to walk. Have you tried power walking. If breathing is difficult what the heck, it's difficult when you smoke, so why not substitute it for power walking. By the way, I've smoke longer than you (I'm 60).

I am not going to be hypocritical, but reading your post seems fairly self explanatory - either quit smoking, or you will die. I have been quit almost 8 months and it has been hard, but I began to value my life more than that little stick. There is a woman in my office building that has to walk so slow to the parking lot or else she will collapse from asthma or emphysema problems. So while it takes her 10 mins to do a 1 min walk, she is always enjoying a cigarette. My parents also smoke and have for 40+ years. Even though I hate those born-again non-smokers, I can really empathize with them. We are given one life and when we choose to continue a behaviour that is virtually killing us (and you have proof) than what is it exactly that we value. If you want to quit smoking you first of all need to really want it, then you need to start changing your lifestyle: no smoking in your house, especially in bed; no smoking in your car; no smoking after a meal. After you have done this for a few weeks in mental preparation for quitting, then pick a quit date and begin the process. It'll be hard, but there is help out there. I know you can do it and we are all hear to help. Value your life not your cigarettes!

Just the knowledge that you NEED to quit is a start. I am quitting, and I know it will be not be easy!! I heard that the herb, lobelia, is helpful for anxiety and easing the cravings, so I have some of that.
Liquid calcium and magnesium help the nerves also.
Good luck to anyone wanting to quit. Do whatever it takes to help yourself! We CAN make it!!! :D
