I'm new here...had my last smoke last night before I went to bed. I'm having trouble keeping a clear head, feel sick to my stomach & have heart burn. I'm doing some breathing exercises and drinking water like mad. How many days can I expect to feel worse than when I was smoking?

It sounds like you're going through the physical withdrawal symptoms. The worst should be over in 3 or 4 days. Just remember - the common cold lasts longer!
Hang in there.

After about 1 week, you will be only having to deal with the psychological part, which can be the hardest. I found just getting through that first day is sometimes the hardest. I remember how amazed I would be by this girl at work who didn't have her first smoke till 3 pm. NOw that I have been quit for over 7 months it amazes me that I ever had one. Anyways, use this board, and use it a lot. Keep a journal to vent all your frustration too, and reward yourself often. You can do it. It will be hard and expect that, but it is so liberating. Hang in there.

Thanks for the encouragement. Last night was very hard. My husband smokes, so there's no removing all temptations in this case. I'm soooooo glad we never smoked in the house. I did take one puff off his cig last night and it didn't taste very good to me. I went in and brushed my teeth. I'll be coming back to vent often. Hopefully everyday will get easier.

Hi my husband smokes and I have been off the cigs since March 2002. It isn't easy but hang in there. The benefits are tremendous. I started off with giving myself a treat for every 7 days I'm smoke-free. I'll go buy myself a nice dress, or lippie or a good dinner - anything! Good luck hon, it isn't easy but if you do cave in, do not let that get to you ok? I mean I've smoked a few times since then but they are one-offs (usually when I'm partying) but I sort of bounce back the next day and conscientiously NOT smoke or socialize for the next 2 - 3 weeks. Hi Dusk,
How are you doing? I just want to give you a word of encouragement, what you are doing isn't easy especially with a smoking husband. I think the first two weeks were the hardest. I quit Sept.16th2001... and I have to admit, I did start smoking a little again when I party (about a month ago). Everyone in my friends circle smokes, makes it so hard. I have decided to quit when I party, just because I end up feeling so guilty. But once you quit... man it's an incredible feeling! You are strong!!
Anyhow.... it's never easy, you always have to work on it. But reward yourself, like the previous posters said... buy yourself something you have been wanting.
We are here for you!!!!
