I'm looking for stories of people who may have taken on both weight loss and quitting smoking at the same time and were successful in doing so.. or unsuccessful.. I've been hit with this wave of major motivation lately and have decided just to go for an all around improvement of myself and the way I feel about myself and these two issues are something I need to take care of. Now this isn't an extremely major deal.. only about 10 pounds to lose and I smoke less than a pack of cigarettes a day, but still not easy I know because just the weight loss Ive managed so far has been difficult.. So just wondering.. if anyone thinks it is taking on too much at one time.. like too many body changes happening at once so it would not be a good idea? or just restricting myself entirely too much at once? I guess the only way to really know is to try but just wondering if i should expect to go absolutely nuts while trying to do this...

This may sound a little crazy, but a friend ate a few large red grapes (with seeds) several times a day. She would freeze them, suck on them, then chew the seeds. The seeds are full of grape seed extract which is very helpful, very nutritious. She got the idea off a message board, and was ready to try anything at that point. She not only quit smoking within days, but she dropped a dress size.
One day 11 years ago, I had a chest cold, and the idea of smoking that day was repugnant. Somehow, I never smoked another cigarette. I must have been ready. My husband still smokes, and just plain wants to. Everybody is different.

First of all, GREAT idea those grapes. Gonna try that :) I smoked for 34 years & i too loved it. But a few DR. visits convinsed me I should quit. I surely didn't want to love smoking to death. I have an extra 22 lbs on my frame that I'm not used to but, I was soooo thin b-4 I quit I looked anorexic. Maybe I was. I ate a sandwich per day,,, maybe,,, if I remembered to eat at all,,, but I would smoke like a chimney. It's been 7 months quit july 1. Hard? Yes!! Worth it?? ABSOLUTELY :)

I have been quit since Jan 2, 2002 and I gained probably close to 20 lbs. Part of it was I started exercising a lot and training for a half marathon, but also because I rewarded myself every chance I could with food. It was probably the first 3 months that I ate like crazy: Big Mac Combo supersized and a filet o fish. It was pretty bad, but I didn't become overly concerned about it. I have always been underweight, and now I actually have some curves. Quitting smoking is very hard, and the thought of gaining weight is often enough to keep many smoking. However, the weight I didn't gain has leveled off and I feel great. I still want to smoke, and often, but I just keep saying no. Good luck to you all.

Hi! I quit cold turkey March 02. I did not put on any weight, in fact I lost weight! Somehow I ate more while I was smoking because I did not feel I was in control of my body. Now I know what's good for my body and what's not. It is not easy sometimes, my demons come to taunt me but.....that's life isn't it?
I like to freeze peeled bananas (I stress "peeled" because try peeling a frozen banana! It's enough to get me smoking again LOL) I prefer them to grapes because they are "creamier"

I just quit smoking, drinking soda and started exercising and dieting on the 16th of Sept. I've never felt better.
I smoked for 30 years and for the last couple of years smoked maybe a half pack a day. I've also put on about 30 lbs in the last 5 years, so I was afraid quitting would make me gain more.
I have tryed many programs in the past and this time I used Wellbutrin, a generic form of Zyban. OMG!!! It took me 3 weeks to quit and I'm done. Have no desire to smoke at all.
I walk every evening at least 2 miles. Drink tons of water through out the day. I'm not on any particular diet, just watch portion size and consider nutritional value when I choose what to eat. I've lost 6 lbs since the 16th as well.
Another benefit, I can sleep at night! I've always had trouble sleeping. Go to bed and stare at the ceiling for hours. Now 10:00 I gotta get in the bed or I'm gonna fall over, which means I wake up perky pretty early in the morning. Of course all three have to contribute to that - walking, no caffiene and no smoking.
Life is good,
Suzanne

Quit smoking January '02 and started eating properly (no faddy diets), drinking loads of water and going to the gym. Have lost 40lbs and hugely improved my cardiovascular and muscular fitness. I now go to the gym 6 times a week and I can run 10k in under 50 minutes. My resting heart rate has dropped to 48 and I don't smell anymore. I've think replaced my nicotine addiction with an endorphin addiction :)
