I quit cold turkey after smoking a pack to 1 1/2 packs a day for about 14 years...I have a stupid question, ...I am really dizzy and really don't feel that well, and my chest hurts really bad and my heart rate is like between 45-60. Is this o.k.? Is is just getting the nicotin out of your system or what. I haven't had a cig since Thursday night...I thought I would be feeling better by now.

Any input would be great...

Hi Sara,
That's great that you quit, my day is tomorrow wish me luck. Anyway, as far as feeling dizzy, all the times that I have quit the first few days I have always felt out of it. The heart rate thing you should check with your doctor on that one.
Good luck to you,
JusFoolin

Do you exercise? I would kill for a heartrate like that! My heart rate dropped from 85 to 65-70 when I quit. The healthier the heart the lower the resting rate! Oprah was bragging the other day on her show that her rate was 44.

Yes!! Normal!! I am almost a carbon copy of your stats (length of time smoking/amount). I also posted here because I was worried, and then I checked a few other sites as well.

Apperently, because your blood is getting so much more oxygen, you are getting dizzy...how scary is that, folks!?! It could also be anxiety and stress from stopping, or a combination of all of the above.

In my case, it lasted about 10 days, and then mostly dissapeared. It can last up to 3 weeks - I read that in a lung assoiciation website somewhere.

Hang in there - all the awful stuff ends fairly shortly - Monday will mark 1 whole month for me... I am feeling great, a little heavier, but otherwise not too bad.

Oh ya - I was also concerned that my heart rate was so low - but it seems to be better now...45 is a little too low though - best keep an eye on that (60 is fine).

I didn't have the chest pains - but I have heard that it is fairly common.

It sounds like you are going through the normal stuff - if you are really worried or uncomfortable try taking a nicotione aid (patch, gum, inhaler) or see your doctor to make sure you are okay - just getting the 'thumbs up' from a doc will probably make you feel much better.

take care, and let us know how you are doing.

45 is not a low rate. Conditioned athletes have reported rates as low as 28-40 bpm. Average is 60-100. Out of shape and above middle age can be higher.
