i can't believe how powerful the addiction is!! i quit yesterday and i didn't have a wink of sleep last night... i had this horrible nervous feeling in my chest and this morning i broke down in tears! I couldn't do it. I have had 2 ciggs today :( am i a failure????

I am making a concious effort to wean myself off them... having less and less by day! I can't do it cold turkey... i am too emotional as it is!

Support would be greatly appreciated!

Please have a look at the response I gave to your other post (under a different user name?), herbal remedies (valerian, passiflora, lemon balm etc.) can work wonders for the stress/panicky feeling and anxiety when you're quitting :)

NO, YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE!!! Quitting smoking is like riding a bike, if you fall off, get back on and try it again. I'm going throught the same thing you are. What you have to do is if you do break down, DON'T GIVE UP! You will eventually have enough will to break this habit.

You have discovered the downside of trying to "wean" yourself from cigarettes. What happens is that the remaining few smokes become doubly important because of their scarcity. If you had weaned yourself to only one or two a day, it probably isn't so much the nicotine that you're missing but rather the habit of lighting up, the important place that smoking had in your life. It is likely that almost every event in your life had smoking connected in some way. As soon as you finished a cigarette, you planned for the next one... and the next. When you quit, that structure is gone and you need to replace it with a new structure or way of living and coping. And that's what's so hard. The nicotine can be out of your body in a few days but it takes much longer to get out of the habit of smoking.

The average quitter tries several times before finally succeeding. Good luck on your next try. Don't give up. Formulate a plan for what you will do and how you will substitute for smoking on your next quit now that you know that getting through the first day or two is going to be tough, plan for it. Don't think of it as giving up something; rather think of it as giving yourself a gift, an adventure.

I also want to add this: you say you can't go cold turkey. Then by all means try nicotine replacement of some sort. This is how I quit and I found it surprisingly easy to not smoke. I used it long enough that I didn't have to deal with the physical withdrawal from nicotine so I was free to deal with the habits I had developed as a smoker - things like what to do to take a break from a task, something to do with my hands, deep breathing, drinking lots of water, going to places where smokers aren't welcome and staying away from other smokers for awhile, low-cal munchies, etc.
Again, good luck with your next go at it.

Yes definetly try using nicotine replacements. I am doing well on the patch. I have smoked some (I would say the equivalent of 4 packs) since I "quit" 5 weeks ago. But that is down from 1.5 packs per day and it has not been that hard. I am now working on not smoking at all. I can go the whole day and not think about it, it's just in the evening if I drink that I want them. Keep trying. Smoking is a double addiction, the nicotine and your attachment to the cigarettes. The patch at least helps with the nicotine.

I am lucky - got a throat infection & the flu last week so I cannot smoke even if I want to. Am chewing the gum. Have tried the plastic cigs they are good if you miss the draw back. Keep trying.
