It really depends whether you stuff your face instead of smoking (like you replace the cigs with chocolate) or whether you have healthy nibbles (Carrot sticks, sunflower seeds, s/f chewing gum and lollipops) and exercise a bit more.

Smoking uses up about 200 calories a day but you can easily compensate for that by keeping busy and going for a walk when the cravings hit.

The main reason why people tend to put on weight when they stop smoking is because their sense of smell improves and with it the taste of food, but if you're already overeating I doubt that makes much of a difference. Also as I said if you replace cigarettes with food then it's no wonder you put on weight! (That's very likely to happen if you've been using cigs to suppress your appetite)

But if you have the willpower to stop smoking, then losing a few pounds REALLY isn't that hard! :)

The best thing to do when you stop smoking is to live healthier as well - try and eat healthy at the same time, exercise, go for walks and so on, and use vitamin supplements (esp. Vitamin B) and stress relief tablets (passiflora/hops) to help you cope!

If you're motivated enough to stop smoking you might as well borrow some of that motivation to eat healthier and exercise more! :)

Thanks Redhead23! No I don't over eat! I just have heard smoking speeds up your metabolism and so I thought that if you quit you would gain weight. Thanks!

Well as I said it does depend on how you quit and what attitude you have.

Stopping smoking also gives you more energy and provides your body with more oxygen so not only have you got more energy to exercise but you've also got more oxygen, which is needed for burning fat! :)

A little weight gain isn't unusual. After all, you're stopping a very "oral" habit. So something is likely to end up in your mouth in place of the cigarette! If it's a lot of extra food, you'll gain weight! I read studies that lead me to believe that at least a small weight gain can be expected, but not inevitable depending on what you put in your mouth. My doctor cited an average gain of 7-8 lbs. would not be surprising (and also not alarming since the smoking is a heck of a lot worse for your health than 8 extra lbs). I've also read a study that smokers who quit using nicotine gum can expect a smaller immediate weight gain than those who quit CT or with the patch.

Another thing about weight gain when you stop smoking - unless you use other methods to stimulate your metabolism or you cut back on your food intake, you will likely gain some weight simply because nicotine has been stimulating your metabolism the whole time you've been you smoking, so when you take the nicotine away by quitting - your metabolism naturally slows down and you can gain a few pounds!

Here's a few tips --

7 Tips to Increase Metabolism

To increase metabolism, always eat breakfast in the morning. Break-fast...break the fast. Don't skip breakfast. If you wait until mid morning or afternoon to eat, your metabolism will run slower. Think of breakfast as adding logs to the fireplace. Your metabolism is the fireplace and logs are the breakfast.

Increase metabolism by eating smaller meals through the day. Eat 4 to 6 six small meals, 2 to 3 hours apart.

Don't depend on herbal products to increase metabolism or energy level. Any metabolic increase will be minimum and herbs are not cheap. Instead, include more energy foods such as whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruits.

Park further away and walk. Use the stairs instead of the elevator when possible. Walk to the post office instead of getting into the car. Take your dog on a daily walk. Do more activities around the house to burn energy instead of wasting money on pills and potions that don't work.

Incorporate a walking routine to increase metabolism at least three to four times a week. Walk 30 to 40 minutes each time. This is the best way to increase your metabolism.

Don't starve yourself when trying to lose weight. This will slow down your metabolism in a hurry. Avoid 5 to 6 hour gaps between meals without eating.

Be committed to eating smaller meals at regular intervals. Prepare food in advance and bring it with you. Never eat sporadically and plan each meal. The common mistake is to skip meals and eat too little during the day. This makes you vulnerable for eating junk food later in the day. Eating to lose weight takes planning.

Good Luck!!

Well, you wanna hear something odd? I used to be a non smoker my self. And I am going to try to quit again tomorrow with the help of wellbutrin which I have tried before. I stopped it because it made cigarettes taste so bad, which I guess is a good thing.

The odd thing is that I used to be thinner when I was a non-smoker. Why? Because I could actually breath well enough to hit the gym. Now I can't even chase after my son or even climb the steps to my house. I am so sick of it. I am also tired of trying to quit for my husband or someone else. I would like to do it this time for me. I want my health back. I want to be able to smell normal. I have all this expensive perfume and I bet no one even smells that first, they smell the smoke. I want to buy a house in a year and if I quit throwing away money on cigarettes maybe I could save some money. I want to be alive in 40 more years without the help of an oxygen tank. I want to be able to run a mile in under 8 minutes again like in high school. I want to go in a club and dance the whole night without a break (except for a beer of course).

Sorry guys, I am trying to get even more motivated. I guess what I am saying is I want to live again!

I experienced pretty signifigant weight gain.

I'ts been 30 days since I quit smoking and I gained about 12 pound total. But I think I'm on the down side finally. I dropped about 3 of them.

I know when I first quit I was so hungry all the time, and I was constantly stuffing my face. The last week my appetite has seemed more normal. Also when I noticed my clothes weren't fitting I started exercising.
