I've been trying to quit smoking since I was 16, now I'm nearing 20 and I've been smoking for 6 years. I realize that I need to quit now but no matter what I try I always go back to the cancer sticks. What should I do?

hey blood,
i have not smoked a cigarette in over 11 weeks. the first 10 weeks i tapered by wearing the patch. trust me, it works. i had to start at step 1 because i smoked more than a pack a day. you would probably only need to start at step 2 (14mg a day). do it. it works. good luck!

The first thing you have to realize & accept is that you are an addict & if you quit & even take one drag you will go back to smoking. You have to take it day-by-day, minute-by-minute at first, as the days go by, the cravings go away. But don't ever be fooled that you can just smoke one every so often, you can't. I've quit before for a year & started again with one innocent drag. I've quit again - cold turkey. For some the patch works, for me it didn't. Nothing worked for me. I've tried everything but that doesn't mean it won't for you - everyone is different. Try them all & DO NOT give up. YOu can kick this habit - there's a site online called quitnet that is awesome for quitters - a lot of support. You are stronger than that cigarette - don't let it control you. You can do it!! Good luck!!! check out that site, it helps...

I am a cigaholic. I will always want a cig. I choose NOT to smoke (it makes me feel like I have to throw up). That is the only way for me to stay quit. I have been quit since June 3rd.
I am thankful I am not a alcoholic.
Maybe you are like this?

It isn't that you can't quit smoking...it is more like...
.........you will not quit smoking! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/idea.gif
No matter what, you can't take another puff. You must do this ONE DAY AT A TIME.
There are so many resoources on the net that can help you. The more you UNDERSTAND YOUR ADDICTION, the better you stand in being armed in working through it. It has nothing to do with strength or the right timing in your life...it has to do with knowledge.
Addicts never settle for just one...they always take them all. If you quit smoking, you can't have just one.
Don't be left behind, your life is in your hands.

Bloodeye, Please just stop! As you get older and have more problems you may find yourself smoking a lot more of them. My daughters boyfriend smokes almost constantly. Our house smells After he leaves. He is either coughing or smoking or both. At night, he coughs like he's going to die right then. And to make it more difficult, he works with a heavy smoker. That guy coughs a lot too. He runs out of breath easily.
My friend from decades ago is 80 and she's on a nebulizer. She did quit 15 years ago but it was too late, she said.
What I did to quit was I made up my mind. I was determined. So I said after this pack there will be no more. This was ten years ago. As they're saying on here the craving just goes away gradually. Please quit.

Agreed - just make your mind up that you WILL beat it and you will. You just don't give in - cravings are fine - just don't go and buy any or smoke any and don't let anyone give you any either.
Remind yourself over and over (make a list and put it in your pocket if it helps) why it is you're quitting and pull it out every time. It's not worth it to continue on because once the damage is done - it's done and you can't turn back and say "I wish I would've quit when I was 35 yrs. old, etc.." So think long and hard about it now and get a handle on it. It's rough at times (I'm doing it cold turkey), but I'm reminding myself of the bigger picture and that keeps me straight.
Pray as well :)
