Has anyone had a discectomy or microdiscectomy to correct a herniated disc? I need to decide between this procedure and maybe nucleoplasty or IDET to correct the sciatica from my herniated L5 S1 disc. I've gotten great info on IDET. Would like to hear from someone about discectomy. Thanks!

Hi Princess Di
Most everyone in this place has had a cervical discectomy mostly with pretty good results, but I am not familiar with a microdiscectomy. I never heardof an IDET. What can you tell us about it.

Hi, Empi!
On the Back Problems board there are several very articulate people who have recently undergone IDET. They are logging their recoveries and comparing information often. It's best you check out their messages on the Back Board, because I am still learning about it myself. I am so happy to hear that there are cervical discectomies here which have been successful. Although my problem is with the lumbar spine, it's a good sign!

I had a cervical diskectomy/laminectomy & vertebral fusion (my own bone grafted). And I've been very pleased. Relief was immediate & my neurosurgeon says I have a very good range of motion, better than he had expected & I have gotten back most of the strength in my hands & arms.
Same neurosurgeon performed my lumbar diskectomy. I have not had any significant problems related to the surgery now 3 years postop. It resolved my most agonizing pain symptoms.
I have never regretted my neck & back surgeries.
Best wishes to you!
