Hi all
Hope everyone had a great weekend! My family and I finally made it to the cabin,I was putting it off as I was worried about the drive(1hr30min)My wife put up with all my slow downs and look out for that pothole for the whole way.Sure was nice to be out of the city for awhile.Went for way more walks than at home, cause our dog always wants to be outside when at the lake.Even sat on the deck and had a few beers.Spring is on its way.+5c sure seems warm.
The drive to and from was far enough for me.Still get kinda tense being a passenger.
One last thing in the form of a question: Im at 4weeks post op and still wear my collar all day do any of you "cheat" or take it off walking around the house?? If so was it at docs orders?Sorry for the rambling post. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/gabby.gif

I only wore my Aspen collar 2 weeks but I have a plate and screws. Since you don't have hardware maybe you should not take the collar off unless maybe your sitting still in a chair that suports your head.

I did not have hardware and I did not take my collar off until the doctor had taken xrays and told me I could. Why take a chance injuring the fusion for only a couple of more weeks of wearing it.

Glad you got to take your trip and had a nice time. I think once you have surgery, you will never be the same in the car, passenger or driver. Or sleep like you did before, so carefree. That's me anyway! Can we say paranoia?
Bet it felt to go though!

Well I called my NS office and the receptionist said that the doc said to leave it on only 2weeks to go.She said that the doc is going to have to re-do someone as they didnt wear the collar properly
So I cinched it up abit tighter and will wait till Im told to take it off.

Philly, as another veteran of the "no hardware" surgery, I would say that you are doing the right thing leaving the collar on for a couple more weeks. I was in mine for 6-7 weeks. Never went without until I was told it was okay.

I do think there are real advantages to plates and screws, as you don't have the muscle atrophy you and I acquire after 6 weeks or so with a collar holding our heads up. My doc also had me switch to the soft collar full time for 2 weeks after removing the hard one, then wean off it during the day and eventually at night. I was probably in some form of collar at least part time for about 3 months.

Don't push it. Better to take it slow and have it take.

Hey Nanner
I was wondering how long till you had fusion? Did you have some days that drove you nuts cause you couldnt get comfortable?? Today was like that for me and Im not sure why.I told my kids to be extra nice to each other and be quiet around Daddy, cause his fuse was real short today. That lasted for at least 40min.They are 9 and 7 yr old boys so that isnt bad!!
I think they know I cant chase them with this neck brace on :D Well Tues will be another day and I havent had many bad ones so Ill shut up http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/gabby.gif

Philly,
Your "fuse" was short, huh? Well, I hope it isn't too long before your neck does fuse and you can chase the kids around. Happy vacationing! Your collar will be off before you know it. Just hang in there and be patient. I know it's real drag, but it will be worth it in the long run. And by next week, you can be telling me the same thing. ;)

Why is it that every time I read your name I think of Philly Cheese Steak? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Take care, Philly...

Philly,
Justin Morgan had a horse... That's what I make of that! Mmmmmm..... cheese steak! (Oh, drat! Getting messages here... Hope my printer cartridge holds out!)

I'm sure I WILL have lots of problems after surgery: I'll have a three level fusion, and I always did have a short fuse. I guess my "kids" will have to take care of themselves. At least that's what they would have me believe. ;) Well, gotta shuffle off to Buffalo: http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif Will just have to leave the rest of the chores 'til later today.
G'nite,

Morgan, I don't know if my NS was too cautious or what, but...I saw an ortho about a month ago and about 9 months post-surgery he said I'm still healing. The fusion would be sound by now, I can do anything I feel like doing, but I'm still healing!

The fusion was considered sound at about 10 weeks, but I still had limits on what I could do. No treadmill, no heavy lifting. I was feeling pretty decent by 6 months out. Hang in there.

Ummmm, Buffffaaaaalllooooooo! That reminded me of wings (other than my own ;)), so I just got back from a dinner of them. That is one thing I decided I had to have before surgery. You know how it is with comfort foods.

Hope you've had a good day, Morgan. And no, I don't usually stay up that late, but I'm still working on taxes. What a drag. Now I have to go "prepare" for another doctor's appointment- you know how you have to fill out sheets of data before you even see the doctor? I'm beginning to really hate that! And the next worse thing is the sheets of questions you have to ask the doctor about.

Hey WR
Taxes  Ill be doing ours on Wed.
Ive always had a problem with comfort foods as Im comfortable with almost all foods :D Hope you get a large tax return and no heartburn from you wings. I had a much better day today but its started snowing after dinner man I am done with winter!!
I know what you mean about filling out forms. I always fill out what I can for the docs before hand as well. Now its the fight with my insurance they say WCB should pay. WCB says insurance should be paying, you know the old run around game
Never a dull moment EH as we say in Canada
Good luck with the doc appointment.
