Hi gang !...just a quick note then back to my pedestal.I had to stay 2 nites because I had a fever of 101.8...then it would go to 100. anything. My blood pressure was high too.
If any are conteplating on donor bone versus your own...let me decide for you : DONOR BONE....this hurts worse than anything. I still have a slight sore throat my shoulders burn, hands tingle..but my hip...I musta been a very bad person in a previous life cause Im getting OH so punished !!
Ill complain at a later time after I go lay down, or sit down, or whatever I can do to feel better...oh...what are most of yall taking for pain , dosage ( i.e.10 mgs) and how often ?

Hi Deana,
It's nice to have you back. I'm sorry the hip thing is being such an ordeal. How is your original pain doing now?
I neglected to share my hospital discharge strategy. I knew I was running a slight fever and there was no way I was staying a third night so I just sucked on ice chips all day right up to when my temp was taken to discharge me. It worked like a charm. :)
I was able to control my post-op pain with over the counter Tyelenol Extra Strength. On a couple of occassions I took 5mg of percocet. (I was taking 60mg a day before surgery).
Feel Better Deana

Deana, good to hear from you, though I'm sorry you feel so punky. Don't feel bad if you need more pain meds than most of us. After all, most of us did donor bone. There is no way, given a choice, that having two surgeries for the price of one sounds like a bargain!
Other than the hip, I hope you feel decent enough. It will get better, promise!
I know that with smokers they do the autograft more, because of rejection issues. Don't know any reason a nonsmoker would need to undergo that pain unless it is a numerous level fusion.
Speaking of painkillers, my doc sent me home with morphine patches, but I quit those after one week when I was almost ready to hit the hospital due to a dang-near impacted bowel. Steer clear of those. The package insert even said they shouldn't be given post-surgery. Now I know why...stupid surgeon!
Other than that it was Lortab or Vicodin in 7.5 mg tablets 3 times a day for a couple of weeks, then I cut down from there.

I am so happy happy happy you are home. I'm so sorry sorry sorry bout the bone on the hip. Do believe we tried hard as we could to tell ya. My doctor, a very excellent brain and spine surgeon at Johns Hopkins states they have no statistics proving it's better than donor. I'm so sorry it hurts. But, on the bright side, it does get better, you are breathing okay, and YOUR ALL DONE! I couldn't be happier for you Deanna...

Deana, you're back! I'm so sorry to hear about your fever and the hip pain. That most certainly will throw a wrench into the works for a while. Just make sure you eat something soothing and sleep as much as you can. Now it's time for some babying and pampering.
Good to see you posting. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi yall
I must be a real sissy because Im smarting !..places that didnt before surgery...Ive been taking it pretty easy but get real stir crazy !...I dont like sitting/laying around doing nothing. Im WAY too active.
Question for bdb and lori1851......when they did that bone graft on ya...did you get stitches and where on your hip did they take it ?...I talked to the nurse earlier and she assumed they took it from the back and was surprised I have stitches.....I didnt feel like getting into question and answers with her so I said Id call back Monday when I felt a little more even keel.
For those of you that have the plate thing...can you feel it ??? I SWEAR I feel something in my throat when I swallow..like a block or something...very weird...
I appologize for not reading or responding to anything anyone has posted new on the board.. Im just kinda lurking around email and thats it....

Hi Deana,
Glad to see up and about, so to speak. What you're probably feeling when you swallow is the trauma to your trachea and espohagus from being clamped to the side. It's normal and will go away in the coming weeks. Trust me ;) it's not the plate.
No need to apologize for anything - you just had major surgery, remember?
Feel well,
Bruce

Hi Deana,
So sorry you're smarting. :(
I really know what you mean about sitting/laying around doing nothing. I'm very active too and can't stand when my back forces me to stop. I hope you're feeling better real soon. And as Bruce said...no apologies necessary. I'll gladly play the violin for you as you whine your totally understandable whines. :)
Take Care,

Hi Deana,
Welcome back!!
I will think of you again later when I am "enjoying" yet another bowl of mashed potatoes!! Sorry to hear about the hip thing. I had the doner bone & remain grateful. I am taking some valium & percocet for pain.
A wee bit of light headedness never hurt !!
Gotta go back to bed; again!! Wanted to say hello & to let you know you have been in my thoughts, foggy as they are. Until later, I remain, only in post-op pain.
Catherine

Hi Deana,
Good to hear you're improving, even if that does mean additional whini... er, violins. Well, my violin, I'm sure, would sound like whining or at least a cat yowling at midnight. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/hammer.gif
Speaking of which, you did get hit with a double whammy http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/hammer.gif http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/hammer.gif You have two surgical sites to comp..., I mean explain, about. Hey, I need my coffee. I can't "talk" straight yet.
Hang in there, Sweetie. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/heart.gif You're over the worst of it.

Hi Deana,
I think Bruce is right about the "fact" of you not feeling the plate , but I think you are right about "thinking" you do feel the plate. I had ACDF C 6-7 with plating on 3-28 and keep thinking the same thing and am still having trouble swallowing and talking. It's been the assurrances and suggestions of everyone here that has kept my spirits high. Keep the faith.

Deanna, I think you will feel the throat thing for a while. Mine is still different from before surgery but the "lump" feeling is gone. It's swelling that has some to do with it. It will go away eventually, but it's not blocked at all... so don't worry about that.
Glad your back and posting, that is always a good sign :D

Deana-
Debbie keep saying what I'm thinking so I'll just be quiet. Yeah right. :)
It took well over a month for my throat to feel reasonably "normal" and it still doesn't feel pre-surgical. No pain though just a sensation. I imagine it will improve a bit more, but even if it doesn't, I'm already used to the new feeling. No biggie.
oops, one more thing. The throat was only a problem when it came to taking my vitamins. I actually ate a spinach/mushroom burrito 3 days post-op . :)
Take care,
Bruce

Deana,
Hope your pain has eased up somewhat. Everyday will get better. Your body has been through a trauma, and it's just responding appropriately. One by one these things will fall by the wayside, until you're back to your old self. I know it's easy to forget how 'normal' feels when you're post-op. But you'll get there. Thinking of you and praying for your first big 'turning point' to be just around the corner!
