looking into the acdf op and just wondering about the recovery and what to expect.

I've read (and been told by a doc) that it's 6 weeks hard collar and 6 weeks soft collar.

But.... that sounds long compared to a few stories I've heard. Does all this vary quite a bit?

What's the real scoop? How much is one's ability to function altered?

Any good articles that describe the variety of post op recovery period?

Thanks..... to all.

Alan

Alan,
Welcome to the board. You will find alot of great advice here. I think the collar times depend on your surgeon's personal technique and whether you have a plate inserted or not.

My NS told me today that he doesn't even have his pt's wear a collar. Said I should be able to drive in 2 weeks and be up and around in 10 days. This is in line with some of the articles I have read on the net.

He told me the plate assures stability, rather than the long length of time it takes for the bone to fuse to create spine stability on its own.
www.spineuniverse.com (http://www.spineuniverse.com) has alot of good info.
