I just want to say "hi" to all the new people as well as to all my "old" friends here. I just have not felt like posting, unfortunately. Sometimes the recovery is a bit rocky, and invariably I would think that we all wonder with these new pain symptoms whether the rest of our lives will feel this way. That ugly short guy with his stilettos has really been doing a number on my right shoulder the past few days, and my right arm has been pretty numb today... something new.... and scary. I'm not sure if it's time to call the doc and panic, but tomorrow is a Friday, obviously one of the scariest days of the week to someone who is ill or in pain! lol At least the Perc is finally helping. I put off having a whole one all day long.
I finally got to our HS to help out in the College Room- volunteering I have done for 5 years but where I have spent precious little time in 2003. I've written (and re-written...)the scholarship booklet the past 4 years. One of my co-workers drove me, and we are planning how to get off to a quick start next fall when classes begin again. I have the most seniority and experience, and I have to figure how to get it all down on paper and/or do some big training next fall, especially if I want to "retire". Already big plans are taking shape for this June and for 2004.
We have a graduation in the family on Saturday, and as a special treat, my husband will be able to be on stage and may be able to shake his (son's) hand after he's presented with his diploma. How many people can do that for their kids at graduation? It'll be a surprise for our son! My family is arriving tomorrow night for the weekend.
Our other guests are leaving tomorrow afternoon after a 10 day visit.... I'll tell you, never again will I allow so many guests (two sets) after major surgery. It's too hard to take, even if I'm not doing the work. I don't like being treated like a hotel; and I have to admit to feeling resentful and feeling used. Hmpf!
Some day soon I hope to be a contributing, productive member here again. But for now, I'm going to bed before the Percoset wears off. Take care, .... I miss you all, and I wish you pain free days and nights.

Hey Wing,
Didn't anyone ever tell you that guests are like fish...after a couple of days they begin to smell? I don't know how you handled the stress of it all. Even if you didn't have to do any of the work. I would be despondent!! I'm sure all that hasn't been very conducive to your recovery. Maybe now you can try and get back on track.
Congratulations to your family and son for graduating. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/grad.gif!!! That's no small thing. I'm assuming he's graduating HS. Any plans for college?
I hope you get some relief from your symptoms soon. Now there's only one more house guest left to go....the ugly short guy with stilettos. He's really starting to stink by now!! :D
Take Care,
Teri

Hello Phantom-
I'm new to the board, but not new to back problems. I've had a lumbar lam and a 2 level ACDF C567. One of the suggestions that my GP back doc and surgeon gave me besides taking meds for pain and spasms was... you will like this one.... MASSAGE!!! I went about 3 weeks after my ACDF, explained to the Mtherapist, she was gentle on the neck, but worked the arms and shoulder blades that had been stressed before the surgery.
I now have a dog gone 4th herniated disc in my lumbar, so my left leg is possessed. Besides aquatice therapy, hydrocodone and steroid injections, I've gone back to getting a one hour massage each week. To be honest, I was raised to believe that massages and long distance phone calls were not for the middle class like me. :) However, even if I was in perfect physical condition, I would still go once a month.
Say it with me.... Massage.

My dearest Sandra,
First things first, congrats. on the graduation festivities this weekend. Celebrate~~ good times, come
on!!
Now, for the yucky stuff!! Sorry to hear that you have been feeling somewhat like I have been.......would not wish it on anyone!! Damn that little pudgy guy anyways!!!! My pain has decided to focus only upon my right shoulder blade area. last week, stiletto heels on both sides, this week, dancing clogs on the one side~!!
I phoned my Dr. about my mood & my wanting to be on something other than percoset & valium......enough is enough!! a month of those 2 combined with my 2...(3 & 5 years old!!) & I was none too happy!!
My surgeon is away in Chicago, so another Dr. prescribed Ultram-50mg (1 every 8 hrs.) & also Celebrex
(200 mg- 1 a day)!! well, I gotta tell you.......I may as well be popping m&m's.....My pain is now rather intense. The chubby guy is gaining weight as I type,
& I only get relief when I lay down. TGIF!!
Not really sure what my problem is!!
Hopefully, we will get to the bottom of our discomfort.
I am willing to receive a massage!!
I am trying my best to get "Mr. Stiletto's" to call Jenny or Richard Simmon's pronto!!
I have been thinking of you oodles!!
Until later, you remain, so dear to me!!
Peace, Catherine

jdog, I'm a form believer in massage, and it has to be deep tissue for it have an affect on me. Mine usually take at least 2 hours, and I usually try to get them once a week. That said, I haven't had one since about January, what with my big surgery schedule. Now at five weeks post-op, I think I'm ready for more.
Debbie, I've been wanting to get back to this for some time now, and I'm still bragging, 'cause it's kind of cool. My son just graduated from college, and DH got himself appointed the student representative for the occasion, which meant he had a small speaking part and was able to sit in the front row of "dignitaries" on stage. So when my son's name was called, and my son walked across the stage, he and his dad got to shake hands and have a big hug! I know that made my son's day (and ours), even for his ADHD A-type personality (I assume he probably had second thoughts about whether or not to even go through the ceremony). The only thing was, his girlfriend, who graduated in an earlier ceremony called him and said, "I saw your dad's name on the program." It was supposed to be a surprise, but that's ok; it was cute anyway.
Hope you all are having a good day! I know, pain free would be better, but....

Congrats for your son! How awesome! It's too bad about all the company though...it's got to be very tiring.
Rest and get better.

Hi Midge,
Yeah, things are getting better after they all left! Whew! Didn't think I'd make it through all the company, and I'm too cheap to throw in the towel and go to a hotel! Ha! I would have had to walk, too. :(
