Hi everyone,

I am having surgery in July (artificial disc) and I am worried as I always throw up after general anesthetics. I can imagine this would not be good after neck surgery at c5/6. I wonder if anyone else was concerned about this prior to surgery and could anything be done?

Hi Mel,
So nice to see you your name!

I am sorry that you are feeling anxious about the whole throw up thing.
i have no problem ( that i know of) & you'd think I'd know eh?! with the anasthetic.

I will tell you though that I got rather sick around the 3-4 week mark~ my hubby believes it was food poisoning! I was violently ill!! did not even make it to the bathroom!! the worst part was losing control of my bladder!!!!!!!! all 5 X's!! I am only telling you this because today i can smile at it!!

I must add that wretching my body was certainly something that I felt the next day!!

If you have a problem with what they normally use during surgery, by all means let them know. they deal with such issues all the time.

I have thought of you often in the days past!!!!
& i will continue to do so in the days to come.
Please let us know what is what!!

Big hug!!
smile at the Fall/Winter weather for me would ya?!

Until later,
I remain,
not throwing up!!
xo C

Hi Catherine,

Nice to hear from you and I'm sorry about your throwing up. Eeeawk! Did it hurt? I bet it did. Glad to hear your throw up free today. I will tell them about my tendencies.
Are you touching your toes yeT? How is your pain now ? Do you find you need many pain meds? A few questions to calm my anxiety. Take care,

Mel

Hi Mel

I to had that happen to me after my first surgery. Dr said I was allergic to what they gave me for anathesia. So now I tell them and they always give me something differant then what is normally used.
Sorry I don't know name off hand .

I would tell them it made you sick so they can give
you something else. Its never a good time to throw up but espically after surgery.

Hope this helps and that you are having a better day

I threw up the day after surgery. They seem to think it was because of all the ice I ate after surgery. I guess I overdid it.

But there was no affect on my neck at all. I had C5-6 and 6/7 ACDF done.

Definitely bring it to their attention that in the past you have gotten sick after anesthesia and they can give you something to counteract it.

Good Luck with your surgery and keep us posted.

I am a firm believer that you need to be on top of the anesthetics in surgery. Many people don't know, but the health coverage plays a big part in your recovery. Of course, a cheaper anesthetia or shall I say "gas" method, is much more cost effective for the hospital. However, you have a talk with your anesthetia doctor, tell him of your problems and demand, yes demand, an injection of sodium penathol or the quality of that same drug. An iv of this nature will not leave you sick the next day. That is what a doctor told my Mom, when I was six years old and we have stuck with that all our lives.
Try it, can't hurt!

Hi everyone,
Elaine, thanks for letting me know what happened to you and I will discuss it with the dr.
More,
Thanks for the advice. I'm glad to hear(well not really) others have this experience as in I am not the only one.
Debbie,
Thanks for that info re the iv. I have been paying through the roof for a while on my health insurance so I will ask the dr for this iv and keep reminding them.

Hi Mel,
okay, you need to be firm with the anesthesiest and let him know that you have a strong history of vomiting post anesthetic. Alot of post op nausea nad vomiting can be avoided depending on the drug used. Also by adding an anti-emetic with your revovery. One of the things that help with this issue is the use of pre-meds. For instance when we do day surgery, we do not use any premeds before the anesthesia , because this greatly diminishes the post-op nausea.
So please make this clear to your doc, there are different drug choices and meds to prevent and alleviate this. If he knows , they can be ordered and used accordingly.
I am glad you are having your surgery, and finding a resolution to your pain. Wishing you all of the best,

Hi Mel,
There is a med they can give you for that. When I worked in oral surgery in the olden days we used to give Reglan, I believe. It made people getting sick from the anesthetic. Believe me, I really wanted them to stop because I was holding the pan they were throwing up into.
I am with you! I don't want to throw up after either!!!

Hello
I also get sick from general anesthetic.
When I had my ACFD I woke up in recovery with, this "nurse" waving somthing under my nose, I think it was an alchohol pad.
The smell made me feel so sick, I kept turning my head left and right, over and over, to escape the fumes.

I remember the nurse telling me not to move my head, but I couldnt help it.
NEXT the vomitting started
OH MY GOD I vomitted for the next two days, almost nonstop!
24 hours after surgery,I was told my doctor said I should go home.
I said there is no way,I cant even move.
I felt sooooo weak.
Anyway after some argueing and sort of threatening politely with a law suit,(I said somthing like,ok if you are going to FORCE me to leave that is just fine, BUT I am telling you right now,
I am not well enough to leave and you know what,I just hope somthing happens to me!)

Anyway they let me stay another day, and magically
I was ok the next day.
For some reason that stuff messes me up!
I am going to heed the advice given above and mention this next time, and hopefully get somthing else.

I have NEVER felt so ill!
Just wanted to share.
OH! :round: MY POINT IS!!!!!!
My neck was fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif
It made me nervous at the time, thinking this cant be good! all this thrashing

I swear I had to have thrown up at least 50-75 times.
Gave my stomach muscles a work out,and I lost 10 lbs.
Good luck
and dont worry you will be fine!
Just tell the anestesia guy!

Mel,

I went thru the same thing. I can't vomit because of a surgical procedure I had done 2 years ago, and have always had problems with anesthesia. I told the anesthesiologist and he was great. They made sure I had something on board med wise, prior to the surgery and postop. I had some mild nausea when they tried to feed me a regular meal the night of surgery, but phenergan fixed that right up.

I also brought home some liquid Phenergan in case I got sick at home. It was a lifesaver.

They will listen to you about the nausea and they should respond.

Hi all,

Kelly, it is scary and I will mention what you said. Glad to know everyone seems to have these problems. How are you going?
Mel, great to hear from you. How are you? I hope things are progressing. Thanks for the great advice as usual.
Finally fused, glad to hear your story, it is reassuring that all that throwing up doesn't snap the stitches or cause to much harm. You poor thing that must have been terrible, especially when your dr said to go home! Unbeleivable and frustrating.
Lea, thanks for letting me know that drug. I remember you saying you were afraid of this especially after your stomach surgery. I'm glad you were ok and not sick. There is hope for us nauseous types! Hope you are recovering well and lying still but I can see you running around somehow.
Mel
