hi all,
came home yesterday. Surgery went well. I ended up having a cervical laminectomy and foraminotomy c6-7. EMG studies said I had no nerve damage and NS said I had a substantial amount of nerve compression. So much for tests!!!!!! Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to everyone on the boards for all your support. It really helped me through some of the bad times. Will write again when I am able. On restricted activities, no stairs etc. And again with these steroids. I feel like the good year blimp lol

HI TO ALL,
I am already going nuts in the house only home 4 days. Steroids have got me a little plumper and the appetite has grown. Keep telling hubby, more to love lol. Well now to all people wondering which surgery is worse.... posterior is!!! My neck feels like someone is in it holding all the muscles and not letting go. First 2 days post-op I had no pains at all in arms and now they are slowly saying hello. but I am sure it is the healing process. I would rather have another fusion than this. Pain...ugh..... will write again when I can see.....lol and keep head up long enough to write. Thanks to all for all the encourgement.

Hi Lori,
I'm so glad to hear from you, although I'm sorry you're experiencing so much pain. I guess it goes with recovery, which I know nothing about yet. Just wanted to let you know I'm thinking about you and sending prayers  and big smiles :D . Now that the weather is warmer (although mostly rainy like ours) it IS tough to be stuck inside. Please take care. Do you have a porch where your hubby could move your chair to? If so, don't forget the lotion and shades http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/cool.gif We're supposed to have sun and warm temps here tomorrow. Hope that's your forecast, too.

Keep us posted,

Lori,

Welcome back. I was praying all day for the group on June 4th. (in between students and overdue books that is.) :)

I can relate to the "good year blimp" feeling. Remember...it's not you, it's the steriods. :) Not looking forward to that part of the surgery. Actually, with the exception on losing some of this pain...I am not looking forward to any part of this surgery.
I never could figure out a hypochondriac (?sp) Anyone who has pain would trade their right arm to be pain/doctor free. :)

May your blimp defleat soon and take your pain away with it. :)

Hugs,

Hi Lori,

I'm so sorry the steroids seem to have caused all that swelling. Please call your doc and let him know. I certainly wouldn't let it go. It sounds like you have a lot of swelling. Your doc's answering service can let him know right away so that he can prescribe something or even just talk to you about it.

I hope you'll post when you can after you speak with him and let us know how you're doing.

Lori~

If I remember right, my "Pillsbury look" went away after about two weeks. I don't remember swelling in the ankles, but had no neck! I'd almost bet that the weight gain is fluid retention. Drink plenty of fluids. I know it sounds like a contradiction, but our bodies retain water when they sense there isn't enough and, I'm guessing, it would help to flush out the residual steriods too.

I hope you're able to rest well. I'm keeping you in prayer.

Take Care,

~Teri

To all,
Yes, I am resting and I do have alot of pain. It is a burning feeling in the entire neck area ( going into shoulder area )with muscle tightness that feels that I have concrete in my neck. I am getting sleep at night with only waking up 1 or 2 times which is pretty good. But when I wake up, that concrete feeling is worse. I am still on precocet, flexeril and cipro. One good thing is my arm pain is GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank GOD for that. Thanks to all for your prayers.

Teri and all...
Hi, the swollen ankles have finally gone down. NS thinks I had a reaction to the steroids. I also had tremdeous amount of swelling in the neck area, face & legs which is also gone. I mean my neck was 4 times the reg. size. I am just waiting for this infection to go away. Been on Cipro 1000mg per day since wednesday and I still have redness, swelling and fevers throughout the day the highest being 100.3. How many days should this take??????I have a question which is baffling me. NS says to NOT put any types of cream on incision. Wouldn't applying a topic cream speed infection???? My sister in law suggested this and now I am not sure what to do.Also, when my sister in law was here to visit today (she is a sweetheart) my other sister in law gave me a neck hug and I wanted to cry..... I held it in not to scare her but gee whiz, that was painful. So tell you guests to keep their arms by their sides lol.
thanks to all you terrific people.

hi,
Still fighting this infection. Incision is still red, hot and bumpy. Been on cipro 1000mg per day since Wednesday. Burning pain still in neck and shoulders. Fevers come and go. Thought most of this would be gone by now. Do you think this is the norm?

Lori,
It doesn't sound like the norm. I figured you should be feeling better within 24-48hrs of taking the antibiotic, especially the fevers! I would definitely call and ask the doc/nurse.

Lori~

I'm not too familiar with scar creams, etc., but I wouldn't apply anything topically until your incision has a good 'seal', and the reddness is gone.

I'm sorry you were hugged so tight that it hurt. You need to make yourself a T-shirt that says, "Hug gently...I'm a work in progress". I don't have pain when hugged, but often the over-zealous hugger will throw me off balance (which isn't hard to do), then just let go of me! I've been the fallen victim of many a hug.

I hope by the time you read this, your fever is history and you're feeling much better. Keep us posted.

God Bless,

~Teri

Well, Today is Monday and NO FEVERS YET!!!! Still have this burning pain and boy does it hurt. Swelling has gone down a little but the redness is still there. Here is to having a good nights rest, and ssome relief from the burning pain. Make sure to let your NS know any and all comcerns in the am.

Hi Lori,
I'm glad to hear your surgery went pretty good! Hope the infection clears up quick, though. Keep calling the doc if those fevers don't quit soon:! that's just not normal.

For me the burning pain was partly nerve pain and partly severe muscle cramping. Keep taking all those muscle relaxants, and when you talk to the nurse or the doc, you can also mention this symptom and see what they tell you. I think some of it is from the original injury, some from the position they have you in during surgery, some from the incision for the surgery, which leaves some for not only the recovery/repain process but for the sudden lack of use of these muscles. So they have good reason for screaming.

I'm sure your neck muscles are not what they were a few weeks ago... be sure to help support your head/neck when sitting up or laying back. You can use your hand behind your neck to do this, but Cliff found that since he could not lift his arms too well, that a long scarf or piece of material around the back of his neck allowed him to grab the ends and help support his neck that way.

Hope you are feeling better soon... it's a rough road back, so don't rush it.

Hi Lori,
I would agree with winged on this , my bet would be nerve pain. I get the awful buning at times and it is nerve related. These nerves of ours can produce a wide array of sensations, deep aching, sharp pain, burning, sense of severe cramping , cold feeling.
This should pass in time with the healing process.
Be kind to yourself, get lots of rest, listen to your body, it will guide you in your need for activity and rest.Take care,
Mel

Glad :bouncing: to here you home. Sorry about the pain. did the NS state if the laminectomy was to take care of the pain and headaches or just to preserve and protect your spinal column.
Both I hope.

Jim,
Surgery was to remove a large bone spur that was causing spinal stenosis and compressing my nerves. I was told if I didnt have this surgery and was involved in another accident I could be paralazed. My spinal cord was heart shaped (how cute!!) rather than round. Just ot let you guys all know, I never had any bone spurs in that area until after my acdf in October so NS thinks it has something to do with the fusion.

Good luck to all
Lori
