Hi all, I'm in serious need of some advice here.

My doc has recommened that I get a cervical pillow. So I purchased one with a foam base & a tempur-pedic top layer. Only problem is the darn thing hurts.

I have herniated disc's at C5/6 & C6/7.

Can someone recommend a better cervical pillow? Maybe one that's a little more comfortable (I can't sleep!!!). Would purchasing a cervical pillow made entirely of the tempur-pedic material be the way to go?

Help, I need your advice & some desperately needed sleep. Thanks all. Cat

Hi Cat,

First of all~~~~let me tell you that I have been
inundated with life, & also the # of newcomers to this particular forum.....

Sooooooooo~~ Welcome to you!!

I have had an interesting time trying to find the right way for me to get comfy & get some sleep!!
Sure, the propped up pillows helped for a while!!!

Pills asissted in the getting there!! but, I could never quite achieve the look & feel that I was searching for! I basically chopped it up to --it will take time & imagination!!
Both happened!! Ain't God good?!

We had a sleep-over at our house a few weeks back; well, all of the kid's needed pillows!! I scoured the house for all of the xtra ones~~~~~~~~leaving myself with the "sh**y" one!!!~~```

After many goodnights.........& a few exhales on my part, I was loading the dishwasher~~turned to grab a coulple of glasses off of the kitchen table, when, lo & behold,~~~~~~I decided to attempt something new!!

I grabbed 2!! chair pillows. You know, the type with foam inserted........& tie-strings around the back?!

Well,,,,,,,,I am here to say, that if you use 2!! perfectly aligned~~~~~& place your head just right!!
What a wonderful sleep you might have!!

please let me know if this helps!
I place my neck right where the pillows end! And, I am here to say that I am sleeping wonderfully!!
I also place a pillow between my knees. Yes, I am a side sleeper!!! and, oh, by the way, it is a wonderful form of birth-contol......... :D
I hope you find "your" spot to sleep in~~~~~

sleep with Angels!!

Until later,
Catherine

I am the proud owner of every type of cervical pillow made!! I have found the buckwheat hull pillows to be the best. They conform to your head without having the foam push up against your neck. My Chiro is one of those eastern philosophical people and he said that foam has its own energy and will exert a force back against your neck which your neck will need to react to. The buckwheat hull pillows conform to your neck without pushing back. I also find that I need a pillow between the legs for side sleeping(does not need to be buckwheat hull!).
You can find the buckwheat hull pillows on the internet or at some major home goods stores.

Hi all,

I have tried all the cervical pillows and my dog has eaton a few(they love the foam). Debbie here suggested a down pillos to cradle your neck. I find I use a foam contour one then a down one on top that moulds around my neck. Sleep is hard with pain so keep trying all types and go with whatever helps you.

Catherine, thank you so very much for your warm welcome. I'm so glad you finally found something that works for you & what a way to discover it :) hehehehehehe. I was actually hoping that I wouldn't have to buy every cervical pillow under the sun before I found one that works for me, but since we are all different & have different spine problems, etc., guess I'm on the quest.

Holly, what a good idea http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/idea.gif. I hadn't thought about a buckwheat pillow, but I'll definately look into it. Thank you :)

Mel, how funny about your dogs. I laughed out loud when I read your post, but boy, what an expensive dog toy.

You know with all the different cervical pillows out there, you'd think someone would come up with one pillow that had all the assets of all those other pillows rolled into one. Hmmmmmmmmm, wishful thinking. Things are never that simple are they.

Well, I'm off on my quest for the perfect cervical pillow & I'll let you all know what I come up with. Thank you all for your replies & your advice. Be talking with you all soon. Cat :)

Hi Cat,
A few years ago I bought the real "T"-pedic pillow but very quickly decided I did not like it. It has been gathering dust along with everything else in my house until this surgery... I've always loved my down pillow, but it's just not the shape I need right now, so since a few weeks post-op when I have been able to lay down to sleep, I have been using (and had to drag to France) the contoured pillow. Sometimes I use the smaller side, and sometimes the bigger side (there are two different heights of "rolled" sides on it). When I got home the other night I tried to use the down pillow... for about 5 minutes, then went and dragged the foam pillow out of my luggage.

Someone else suggested the buckwheat hulls, too, but I have not personally tried it. At some point I may, though, because even though I do best on the cervical pillow, it still does hurt sometimes! Dang!

Hey thanks WR

Last night I spent about an hour on different websites looking at all the different cervical pillows out there.

Holly, I found the authentic Buckwheat Hull Pillow.

Besides finding the Buckwheat, the different varieties of every possible material & mix of material of contour pillows..........I have found the tri-core pillow (Catherine,, this might be a good one for you...it does look like a chair cushion), the bed wedges, the "true" reading in bed pillow, etc.

I also found a new design. One place calls it the theraputic pillow & another place calls it the ergonomic pillow. Like the Tri-Core pillow it states that it is design for both back & side sleepers, but looks nothing like the tri-core or the contour pillows.
It is a smaller rectangular shape with a concave in the middle for the head for back sleeper & from that concave extends a wedge for neck support. If you turn on your side, I think your supposed to move from the concave to either one of the sides that does not have the wedge. Very Strange design.

For those of you that are interested in looking at it......one of them is on the valuemedical site & the other is one the painreliever site. This pillow has me very curious & I have printed it off & will speak with doc about it at my Tuesday appt. I want to see what he thinks about it. It is sooooo unusual.

What will they come up with next, lol. Cat :)

Oh, P.S. I did dig out one of my old pure foam cervical pillows out of closet last night. Dusted them off & tried both of them before I went to bed. I discarded the thicker softer foam one & choose the mid-firm/soft flat foam. I slept like a baby for once!!!! & I didn't spend a $100.00 for this old pillow. I believe it was originally $25.00 or $30.00. Thank goodness I didn't throw it away, like I considered doing about a year ago.

Anyone want my "Best cervical pillow" that I spent $100.00 for??? LOL
