Hey all~~~~I thought this thread might all give us a laugh if we post what funny things we have been incapable of doing due to our neck and/or back problems.

Here's my funny story....................

I had always taken for granted the little things when taking care of business in the restroom. We'll one day I was wearing jeans & upon finishing my business found that I was having the most difficult time in getting my pants back on .

My 1st thought upon discovering this was "I never realized that a pain in the neck would cause so much of a problem in pulling the pants back up".

;) Next................. come on folks, lets have some good laughs at our own expense Cat :)

Well, after my ACDF, for about 6 months, I couldn't put a belt on. I couln't get my arms to go around to the back loop any more to slip the belt through. So I had to put the belt on my pants before putting my pants on, so it's become habit now.

I've also noticed that I've lost some head turning motion, I used to could turn my head around to the left to see if anything was coming up on me as I entered the interstate. Now, I just gun it and use my rear view mirro and hope that no one tries to pace me, or they'll be in for a surprise. :)

I've had such a problem in tying my shoes because I would bend over and start to black out. So picture a 17 year old football player that will be a senoir in high school tying his mother's shoes. I told him and his siblings it was my right for them to tie my shoes now. I did theirs and taught them how.

jdog...
I was sitting here crying and came across this and yours made me laugh. Thanks...
I been sitting here crying so hard like someone died until I got sick to my stomach so I came to this board to read.... OK now to think of something funny, lets see, when I had my neck brace on and could not see my feet I did a dance with the cat between my feet thru the hall way until I hit the wall, and first time I brushed my teeth I could not bend my head over to spit very well and I looked like I had rabies with all the foam on my mouth, and if I have to back out of a parking spot now days I tend to cuss more freguently..... Ok next...

I'm so sorry that your all having such problems. I had my ACDF on May 8th C-5-6, and I have complete mobility back in my neck! Someone said I may have limitations, but I don't! Maybe it will take you a little longer, be patient!

My story is a bit different~

My mother took for my first public trip to the grocery store. People were actually gawking(not looking) at me.(hard to hide this collar) At first I was embarrassed. Then I was mad. Through every aisle I said "excuse me, FREAK SHOW coming through". I got a big chuckle out of the reactions.(My mother did not find it funny???)

The funniest was I got a speeding ticket the day before my surgery and had to appear in court one week later. I got called up to the bench and the judge indicated he was knocking it down to a parking violation because I had a clean driving record. He asked how I pleaded to the parking violation and I said "guilty" - well he kept looking at me so I said it louder. He then said he heard me the first time but was admiring my neck brace and he asked what I did to deserve both the brace and cane. I told him I had two discs removed and he commented about someone else having the surgery who was doing fine now. He wished me well and let me go without a fine. My sister said he must have felt sorry for me - based on he was starring at me for so long and felt guilty. I just thought it funny the look on his face when I came up to the bench. Don't know if he was thinking maybe this happen as a result of my speeding - or if I was driving with the brace at the time of the speeding and he was being too nice letting me off.

Another thing we laugh about now but didn't at the time. My surgeon had put tape on the back of my neck(I guess to keep my hair down or for whatever reason). He never removed it after the surgery and when I was able to remove the brace the following week to take a shower I decided I was going to remove it. Well I tried and it hurt like heck (I think pulling that off hurt more than the incision itself). I was sure I was going to pull the bone out of place. Well I let out one yell for my mother (who was staying with me at the time) for help and she came running (bad knee and all - said she hadn't moved that fast in years - thought I fell). She tried her darndest to get the tape off and not hurt me - I think she was worried if she pulled too hard she might pull enough to wrip my incision open in the front. I kept just saying - cut it out - Tracy my hairdresser can fix it later after the brace comes off. But she managed to get it off without cutting the hair. We laugh about this now on how I scared her.

Well,

The speeding ticket story makes me have to add mine. I had my lumbar laminectomy and came through with flying colors. The surgery was pretty much textbook, no fusion was invovled, thank goodness.

Well, I had 3 week checkup at the NS's office. I went in, was taken to the examining room. He walked in with a tray, with tools and bandages. Here was my NS about to inspect my incision and change the dressing himself. Has this ever happened to anyone? Well, I'm diabetic, so he was concerned about the incision healing. He took the dressing off, I told him how good it would be to be able to take a shower after 3 weeks of just washing the pits (LOL). Well, I heard him mutter something as he looked at the incision. I turned around to see what was wrong. He said, nothing was wrong, he was just surprised that I had healed completely. He said I wouldn't even have to have a 2nd followup unless I was having pain, which I didn't.

Well, that was a Thursday. So Friday was my first day to drive. I hit the mall and walked for a while. Had a shower, smelled of Right Guard, smelled the cookies baking, looked at the girls in the tight skirts. :)

Well, on my way home, I go clocked doing 77 in a 45 MPH zone. Had to appear in court 2 months later. Told them my story, they dropped it to court costs of 90 bucks and if I don't get any tickets through next February, it will be wiped from my record.
