View Full Version : I Feel Like Bill Murray In Caddyshack

For those of you who have seen Caddyshack and the girations Bill Murray went through with the gopher, you'll appreciate this. I have a woodchuck that has been pressing his luck with me. He has found my garden and decided he likes to test my patience. The problem is that when I see him, he seems to see me first and is gone in a flash before I can get the rifle out. Recently I came home early from work, and it's a good thing I did, because my wife would have freaked out if she had gotten here first and found what I did. As I walked up my steps to my side porch, I happened to look down and at the top of the steps and on the door mat was that damned woodchuck taking a nap! I'm not sure who scared who, but I started yelling and he started scrambling and finally dove off the steps with me close behind. He ran under the back deck and stayed there, so I ran inside to grab the .22 rifle and when I came out he was gone, of course. Tonight, I spotted him in front of the house (we live way back from the highway), so I ran to go upstairs and retrieve the rifle and fell on my butt sideways and jambed my bad shoulder once again. It hurt like hell but all I could do was laugh, because Bill Murray came immediately to mind with his "gopher cong" dialogue. Some days you're the windshield, somedays you're the bug...but it ain't over till it's over... :D

Keith,

Your not living right.... I don't know what you did....but it's trying to haunt you. What about a live trap? I'm sure you have those don't you? I know what will do the trick.... I'll sent a picture over, that will scare him to death and hopefully save you from self destruction! :D

Be careful,
Harvey

Keith -

We're not laughing with you, we're laughing at you. :) No wait, nevermind, that's right. :D

Go to eBay and do a search on "land mine" or "hand grenade" and I'm sure you'll have success. :D

You'd think those darned coyotes that keep me up half the night howlng would take care of it for me! It took me several years to finally thin out the woodchucks (the place was overrun with them at first) to where they are tolerable. I don't mind them back further in the meadow, even though they make a mess of the field with all the burrowing, but when they are competing for my fresh veggies, I draw the line. I wouldn't even mind if he just ate the grass on the lawn. I've had a few that I harrassed enough that they just packed up and left, so maybe he'll do the same. Next year I'm going to invest in a fence for the garden, it will help keep the deer and turkeys out too. Ah, the troubles of the big city life... :D

Keith,
Thanks for sharing. It is toooooooooo funny. I can just picture it. Read your story to my 17 yr. old and he asked if I had changed from cervies to junkies?

Told him some of us were but we could justify it.

Good hunting!!

Keith,

Lil Woodchuck Bob just wanted to be friends.....why in the world would you scare the little critter so??

I get a mental pic of the "deck butt slide" and have to grin. Brother I know that had to hurt but oh would I have given the price of admission to see it!!

Good luck, Lisa

Hi Keith,

I bet you really want to kill him after that fall. I could see my husband (a hunter), staying up around the clock with a gun. Are you getting any sleep? How's the shoulder today?

I think old Woodchuck Bob got the best of that round. My shoulder is pretty sore today (not to mention my butt). Of course my pride probably took the biggest hit, because my wife witnessed the whole thing. She is pretty used to that type of thing anymore, and just gives me the standard eye roll as she turns her head walking away shaking her head. If I don't get him, I'll at least make him so paranoid that he'll stay out of the garden! Either that or he'll get so distracted laughing at me trying to get him that a hawk will swoop down and get him. :D

Keith-

Obviously, the animal has a friend by the name of B. Bunny, and you've been consulting with Elmer Fudd. :D

Hi Keith

All you farmers must be alike.
Tell you a story about DH.We have a groundhog that lives over by barn and for weeks when he is seen DH runs for gun.Now ready aim fire MISS. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Claims its the gun and I really know it is but won't let him know that. Any way last time he was shot at he stood up on hind legs as if to say ha ha you missed again then ran for cover.I just had a good laugh with that one
Hope you didn't injure yourself to badly.Maybe you need to let wife take care of the animals till your more experienced. :D

One thing that hunting has taught me over the years is to have a good sense of humor, that's for sure. Not that I'd really call what I was trying to accomplish hunting, but in general. I can relate to your DH's experiences, I've mmmmmmmmissed a couple times myself over the years. The funny thing is that the really difficult shots I make, the easy ones are the ones I screw up. :D

Hi Keith,
This is rather hilarious. Any luck yet? I bet your getting your share of exercise on this one. Go Elmer! Perhaps roadrunner would come in handy for this one!

It's still Bob the Woodchuck winning the game. As a matter of fact I haven't even seen him since the other day, maybe he had a heart attack laughing so hard at me. :D
