Can someone please tell me whether jogging is good for people with herniated disks?

Does it help, is it recommended? Or not?

Thank you,

Lucian

i would say it is not a good idea to put anymore pressure on the spine like that but it is up to your doctor....it depends how old you are, etc....for me, i can not run anymore, maybe a fast walk if i am lucky....used to be a jogger on the treadmill, now dont do that first of all it gives me a headache and 2ndly it hurts the rest of my back.....but then i have all sorts of back problems and dont wanna make it worse off by jogging any. mistyone

I have herniated discs and my physical therapist recommended walking (not running) fast on a treadmill for aerobic exercise and also working on posture. No idea about jogging.

luciansava~

Running and jogging are both no no's with herniated disks! I guess you should ask your doctor and it depends on how bad they are. With me both are out forever including any type of pounding (sledding, horseback riding skiing etc.)

Again best to ask your doctor.

I ran up until the day before my surgery. I honestly don't think it made my symptoms worse. Sitting at the computer, doing paperwork, and driving were worse. I did try to run on soft surfaces like the beach and I reduced my mileage a bit. You should probably have your running posture assessed by an expert (a physical therapist who is a runner worked with me). If you are running with your head forward this will stress the discs even more. You will also want to invest in a good pair of cushioned running shoes. I'm walking for the time being, but I can't wait until I have the green light to start running again. Good luck!
