Okay this is going to sound rather weird and I am really embaressed about it. I 16 and think I have a "phobia" (?) of have a bowel movement anywhere else but my own house. I think to myself that I need to go and I should and that its okay, but my body cant. I will hold it till I get home. Even if I am at my best friends house I still have trouble... Sometimes I will get constipated from not being able to go like when I am traveling. THe few times I do I have to be completly alone or in the middle of the nite when no one else is awake. I dont understand why? I just know this is a problem and I am goin to have trouble when I go off to school in two years. Any advice or comments would be apreciated. Thanks

I don't have any advice for you, but this isn't the first time I've heard of this.
I have a very close friend who's the same way.
She will not go anywhere other than her own house.
The summer we graduated High School we went to the beach with a bunch of our friends.
She didn't go until the fourth day we were there, and she only went then because she was the only one in the condo at the time.
She doesn't have panic attacks, OCD or depression..none of that.
She just won't go unless she's home.

i've also been one of those people who only take a crap at home. one time when i had to go REALLY bad, i actually went home during my lunch break at work so i could go. *laff* usually i try to hold it in. i actually do have major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, and possible OCD. i've always been this way.

as far as suggestions.... it takes awhile to get used to having to go in a bathroom with other people in college. my advice is to start out going in the middle of the night (if you're an insomniac like me), when there are few people up and in the bathroom you share. or when you first go off to school, just flush a couple of times when you go and try to pick a stall near the showers. i remember this one chick from college used to flush about ten times every time she went.

I heard of a person who couldnt go unless someone was with them in the room, probably related to when they were a small child

I used to not even be able to pee with someone in the room. I always hated taking a dump, though. When I was little, I'd hold it in and go maybe once or twice a week. By then, my poo was so big, it would hurt me and stop up the toilet. That made me hate pooping even more! I can go in a public place, but only if it's a private bathroom (no stalls.) I'm still afraid of stopping up the toilet, though!

Don't let this ruin your life. It has my moms .... She will go nowhere - she is like a hermit in the house. Her whole world now revolves around going to the bathroom.

Here are some ideas. If your in a private restroom but people are right outside the door, let the sink water run. Fill the toilet with toilet paper so there is no sound (sorry this sounds gross). That works in a public restroom too.

Don't leave the stall till everyone has left the restroom.

Try to get your body on a schedule. Some people can do that. They go at the same times everyday.

Yes I can relate I find myself drinking pepto when I go to public place to eat that is but if you are haveing on and off pain feeling the need to use the bathroom and cant this can be called IBS and I have it think mine is severe I cant eat in a public place due to it at all coming back out five minutes later so I dont stick around long and I am off to home and even developed fear of going out in public places because of this. Oh well I guess we just have to suffer.

My brother was the same way. He was always constipated, one time it was so bad he had to be taken to the hospital and they had to flush him out.
Now he suffers from colitis, don't know if all the holding back has anything to do with it, but it could of helped.
When you go on ignoring your natural urge to go, your not even going to feel the urge anymore, and you'll be packed, bloated and in pain. It's going to bring you a lot of health problems.
In order to change it, I would think the best thing would be when you get the urge, and your in a public place, go. Don't wait. When you get in there, flush, then start concentrating while it's flushing. If no one is in there just go. Til someone comes in then keep the flushing going if it eases your anxieties. Just don't hold it, your going to mess yourself up in the long run.
No one cares like you think they do.
It would be a lot better than messing yourself up to where you'll have to go see a gastroentologist, and they all have to fill you up with barium through your anal area and study you down in that area, puting scopes and tools in there. Sorry to be so detailed.
The only way to break the fear is to face the fear, not cater to it and make it worse.
