The way I understand it is that there are two types of stroke: One is cause by a hemorage (bleeding in the brain) The other is caused by a blood clot which blocks off blood flow to the brain. So sorry to hear about your aunt. There are quite a few good websites on this which help explain it better than I

Kristi,

Angie is correct that there is two types of strokes, clot (the most common) and haemorrhage (bleeding in the brain cavity). There are however many different types and causes. Some are AVM (malformation of arteries), Anuryism, drug abuse. In my own case it was elements in my blood being out-of-whack, the elements predisposed me to clotting (see my reply in 'clotting disorder).

16 months ago I had an arterial clot complicated with a haemorrhage between the cerebellum and brain stem. Post op I had a large DVT left leg and for good measure a pulmonary embolism.

I was in a coma for 5 days, quadruplegic for 4 weeks, learnt to walk in 5 weeks. Over the past year I have progressed from 9 hours a week to 30 hours a week at work, and regained my drivers license.

When 60% of people with this type of stroke dont make it I consider myself lucky to have made a 100% recovery.

This message is for Peter, my dad had a stroke two thursdays ago, and is in ICU (Intensive Care Unit). Affected right side, cannot move arm or leg only a little, speech is impaired, do u think he too has a good chance to be the same at least a little??? He is 63! they said it was a cerebral hemorrage, they also did a craniotomy to allow for the swelling to expand. Im so lost, please help!!!!!

In our family the brain damage is caused by tiny bits of plaque entering the bloodstream and blocking the oxygen supply to brain cells.

This is different from clots or bleeding but rarely mentioned. I would like to hear from anyone who has experienced this. It seems to be hereditary as there are no stroke risk factors in our family but it is affecting females through several generations.

A hemorrhagic stroke is not caused by clots. A vessel bleeds into the brain. As far as I've been able to discover, the basic difference between this type of stroke and an aneurism is that a stroke quits bleeding. As for recovery, I had to undergo lots of physical therapy. My stroke occurred on 12/20/06. My right side was left basically useless, and I had a right side visual deficit. I still have a numb right ear, which affects my hearing "somehow"--talking on the phone is difficult because of not placing the phone in the right position. However, I am typing now, even though my right hand floats around and has to be watched. I went from a wheelchair to a walker then to a cane. At home I can maneuver by occasionally touching furniture or walls for balance. I drive. I returned to teaching at a junior college in the fall of 2008. I swim/water exercise (swim is really a loose description here) and use a treadmill regularly. I'm 61. There is always hope. God is good.
