Hi,
My father (73 years old, in China) suffered from a stroke, now he can not speak (I can not understand what he is saying), also can not write (and can not use his right side), my whole family can not communicate with him and he is depressing. I am in Us now, does anyone know is there any thing could be done to help him communicate with us? Is there any equipment like computer or something I can buy to help him communicate with us?
Also does anyone know where I can get some help for this ? where can I ask for professional opinion?
Thanks a lot.

After I had my stroke, I couldn't talk for a while. To help people communicate with me, my therapists had a piece of paper with pictures to represent the words that most people say; all I did was point to what I wanted to say, and they usually figured out what I was trying to say. For example, if I wanted to eat, I would just point to the picture of the person who was eating. If I wanted to go to the computer room at rehab, I would just point to the picture of the computer. While this helped a lot, it has also left me with the bad habit of always pointing my finger when I want something.

TAAD, as your father in is China he should seek acupuncture and Chinese herbs. They are very effective in post stroke recovery.

Taad,
If he was here, in the US, the thing to do would be to have him start speech therapy.
I am not sure that something like that is available there. He also needs to start (if not already doing so) a general daily exercise plan.
Peace
