I am 27 and just recently found out that I have Factor V Leiden following many pulmonary emboli, DVT's, a stroke at birth, and 2 TIA's. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi Cheliqua,
I am forty 45 and had a massive stroke complicated with a haemorage, followed this with a large DVT left leg and for good measure a Pulmonary Embolism.
The cause for all of this has been identified as 1. factor V leiden mutation (hereditary) 2. lupus anticoagulant 3. anticardiolipin IgG antibody All these elements combined caused the various clots that I had.
As for the stroke I was in a coma for 5 days, quadruplegic for 4 weeks, learnt to walk in 5 weeks, I have no known memory or speech problems ( all though I should). I have regained my drivers licence, and returned to my old job part time.
I have been classified as having APS AntiPhospolipid Syndrome. For me I am on a life long therapy of Warfarin (Coudamin) which is a blood anticoagulant.
If you want more information please email me at pbrown_aus@hotmail.com
regards, Peter

Leslie,
The elements that I listed above in this message string as causing my various blood clots can be tested for with various blood tests. The hereditary problem will always be there if you have it. The other items can drift in and out of whack so testing is not always conclusive. It may be a start for you though, your local GP can get you started.

Leslie,
My Internist was the one who discovered it. Now, I am followed by a hematologist and also a high risk OB/GYN. They are still baffled about all the events, but the main thing is as of right now, Coumadin seems to be doing the trick! Hope this helps!!! ;)

Rick,
You can find a very active forum on antiphospholipid antibody syndrome at www.delphi.com (http://www.delphi.com) from there you should find links to other sites.

Cheliqua-
My Dad just had a hemorrhage this year. He has taken coumadin for 15+ yrs. We have learned a whole lot, that we never knew about that drug. The food not to eat, symptoms, etc. He/whe had never been warned. If you have not gotten good info. on it. Get it. It may save your life.
