Pain in past broken ulna with plate & screws

Six years ago I broke my ulna sparring in karate. I had surgery to repair it & they used a metal plate and 6 screws. The hardware is still in my arm. Occassionally over the years I will experience a little dull pain either with rainy weather or if i lift/pull something heavy in an awkward way. However for the last 2 days I have had an ache in my arm that is constant, dull, and really kind of freaking me out. It has become so bad this evening that I have taken a Vicodin, and have a heating pad on it...waiting to see if it works. Anyone with a similar experience? Any thoughts and/or advice?
Thank you...J

Re: Pain in past broken ulna with plate & screws

I just had the hardware installed on my ulna last month.

I asked my Orthopedic surgeon about the long-term effects of having the hardware in. He said some people never have problems and that others need to come in and have it removed. He indicated it really is individual by person and that there really isn't a certain time frame for when problems begin occuring. It might be that you are to the point you need to go back for a consult with your doctor.

Re: Pain in past broken ulna with plate & screws

I'm experiencing the same thing. I broke my radius and ulna about 7 years ago. They were repaired with two plates and 12 screws. There has always been some pain in my ulna when lifting or putting it under some kind of stress - something I've learned to live with. Up until about 3-4 days ago the pain has become intense to the point where I am not getting much sleep and it hurts for about 90% of the day - it's pretty severe at night. I've noticed the pain is most intense at the end of the plate in my ulna towards my elbow. Closer to my elbow I can feel that the muscle (?) tissue is under pain and I can follow that pain, which eventually feels like nerve pain, all the way down my arm into my wrist and hand. Everything still operates fine but it hurts. My guess is that the plate irritating the muscle around it and the plate needs to be removed. Any updates on your condition? I've read many of these online posts and yours sounds the most similar. Thanks in advance.
