Re: Some questions about arthritis

As far as a cure for arthritis, sorry but not at the moment. There are however many medications available to help relieve the symptoms and to slow any progression. The best thing to do is get checked out by a rheumatologist and they can decide what is best for you. They can also help with any excercises that might be good for you. Some things work fine for some but not for others.

Since I also have arthritis of the neck and hands I can tell you that walking is excellent, but weight lifting can be an aggravation at least with my neck and wrists and hands. Tai Chi is gentle but Yoga and their stretches can be trouble if you are not in shape to begin with, I know that by experience. Anything gentle on the joints is always helpful. I have mild arthritis in the back, feet and hips also and sometimes walking on the treadmil for a long period causes some discomfort so I switch to the elipitical machines to finish off. So no heavy weights try 2lb barbells if you want and see what you are able to do with comfort. I can use the 2 lb hand barbells at times but not many repetitions.

My suggestion would be to seek the advice of a Rheumatologist. They are specialists who only treat people for arthritis and the pain involved. They'll be able to tell you what kind you have and how to treat it. They'll also send to you physical therapy if needed. In the meantime, try warm compresses and baths. Swimming is a very good exercise for arthritis as its easy on the joints and there is zero impact.

I wish you the best of luck!

That's right swimming is also excellent, unless of course you are afraid of water in which I AM! LOL
