Anyone had knee replacement young??

Hi there,

I have been scheduled to have knee replacement surgery on April 12th. I'm going to be 39 in a couple of weeks. I wondered if anyone had this done around this age and if they would share their experience with me.

I got a little upset the other day because when I called the office to see why my pre-op instructions did not have my first P.T. appt. she said that you don't have P.T. until after your 4 week post-op check up. I thought that was odd and asked if it was really true that you don't have P.T. for 4 weeks. She said no, you do get some in rehab. Now the surgeon had told me that I would be 2-3 days in the hospital and POTENTIALLy a few days in rehab. His office said they always schedule people to go to rehab for 2 weeks straight from the hospital.

I'm wondering if the discrepancy is because maybe it's an older demographic that typically has this surgery and maybe they don't have someone who is able to support them at home? I have a partner who is not working and will wait on me hand and foot. The only thing I have to be able to do when I get home is get up my stairs to the second floor because that's where the bedroom and bathroom is.

Any stories would be helpful. I don't have another appt with the surgeon for another month and will definately ask then but thought maybe someone had been through this and could share.

Re: Anyone had knee replacement young??

kathi - i have also fought this "too young for knee replacement" battle.

With today's technology, a replacement can last many many many years.

with i had more to offere
have several friends who have underfone the procedure and doing great.
the healing will take time and therapy; but life should be much much better

good luck !!!!!!!!!

as for me,,,it's glucosamine sulfate, exercise when tolerable,,
a little bit of this and that... and replacement someday.

I should mention.
have you ever been told or checked into the
MINI KREE REPLACEMENT "REPICCI IMPLANT"
it may be known by other names also ...

this has a real short down time for people.. check it out...

you may indeed need the full-blown TKR; but take a peek

good luck F-L

Re: Anyone had knee replacement young??

Hi, You Are Not Really That Young At The Age Of 39 To Be Having A Knee Replacement. I Had Both Knees Replaced At The Age Of 19! I Am Now 44 Years Old And I Have Had 35 Joint Replacements So Far! I Have Had Just About Everything Replaced So Far Except My Ankles Which Need To Be Done, But Have Other Problems With My Elbow That Has To Have Surgery On It First.your Replacement Should Last The Rest Of Your Life. I Would Be Happy To Answer Any Questions If Y0u Have Any. Thanks For Listening.

When are you due for the surgery?

I had my left knee replaced when I was 40 and was single. I also only had therapy while in hospital, and had to do my own when I left the hospital as my medical aid did not pay for phsio out of hospital. On recommendation of a phsio lady at my church I bought myself an exercise ball and used this to rebuild the knee after the op and was amazed at the results - ask about this when you see your specialist next. I also had an ecercise bicycle which also helped a great deal in getting movement back. Also make sure that before you go to the hospital that everything at home is within easy reach when you get back it does help. (fortunatey my meals were prepared for me!).

I also was told by my therapist too make up a small sand bag to place on the knee for ten minute periods ie 10 min on 10 min off for 1 hr 3x daily to assist in straightening the knee after the op ( do this with a heat pack ie heat the knee before placing the sand bag on each time). ! found that this also helped me a lot in my recovery. BUT please do NOT push yourself I did and the recovery took much longer as a result.

I am now 51 and am due to have my right knee replaced so I am adressing you as much as myself!. On the 26th of August)

Hope that I have been of assistance please feel free to ask any other questions. (oh yes swimming helps with recovery as well)

Regards

Bruce

Re: Anyone had knee replacement young??

Hi Bruceme....if you check the date in the upper left hand corner of the posts, you see that this thread is over 7 years old. I have no idea if these people are still posting.

I had both knees replaced at 47 and know they are doing these TKR's earlier and earlier. Wish I had mine done that early but then again, I am now ready for revisions at 60. So maybe waiting was better.

Thanks for the post.

Jenny
