Im 22 yr old male. I have been suffering from chronic pain in both my knees for the last two years. At times there are clicking sounds when i stretch my knees. Also i f i climb too many stairs, drive a lot, or sit on the ground for too long, they get swollen and then ache like hell. I have been to many orthos, rheumatologists and physiotherapists but no one has been able to eliminate the problem. I have also taken a lot of NSAIDS and stuff but no marked difference. Lately i have stopped taking drugs and started working on my quads and hamstrings. This has paid dividends as my knees ache a lot less. But the problem is that the pain is still there if i exert too much.
I also have elevated uric acid levels, high cholesterol, and elevated liver enzymes. I am also very much overweight for my age and height (198 lbs on 5`9 1/2). I do not exercise and lead a largely sedentary lifestyle.
These two years have been very frustrating for me and they have taken the toll on my emotional and psychological health. I suffer from mild depression and also have sleepless nights.
I want to step out from this mess and lead a perfectly life like i did before. Please help me out by giving suggestions as to what i can do. Also is there any good supplements in the market which can alleviate the sitaution (i am really sick of all drugs). Thanks

Hi: I'm sorry you're in so much pain. I can relate as I have arthritic knees too. Bextra helps me quite a bit. Have you tried any of the newer NSAIDS? I guess you can't take cholesterol lowering drugs since you have elevated liver enzymes? My whole family has high cholesterol and we take Zocor. As far as exercising goes, the stationary bike causes me the least knee pain. The treadmill causes the most. St. John's Wort is supposed to be good for mild to moderate depression. I wish I could help you more, but I've learned that you have to keep searching for a good Dr. until you eventually find one. I know it's frustrating and expensive though, but don't give up. Keep in touch.

Hello,
Thanks for the reply. It was very comforting
Well i dont want to take any more NSAIDS; rather i would continue taking homeopathic medicine (atleast they dont have side effects!) and doing strength building exercises for my quads and hamstrings. I am thinking of starting swimming regularly (i used to swim but usually do breast stroke only and with my condition its pretty painful). Do u swim? I have heard its good for patients with arthritis. I do hope i find the "GOOD DOCTOR" u mentioned!
