GERD and arthritis meds - Arthritis Message Board

I have severe GERD with Barret's esophagus non circular and with no cell changes, so what meds have any of you found that don't cause a big flare? We are still trying out meds and I now started on nexium which I think is starting to relief this somewhat. All the current arthritis meds I can't take, vioxx, celebrex etc. I also take actenol for osteoporosis and I stopped taking that til I get this under control. Are there any "older" anti inflamatories that work pretty good and a bit easy on GERD? I'm at a lose for what to take right now. I have osteo in the hands, feet, neck and spine and sometimes it's too much to handle. I can't even eat for comfort right now.

Hi. I have GERD also and take RX strength Pepcid for it. For my arthritis, I'm taking Bextra and it doesn't give me heartburn. On the other hand, I take Flexeril which is a muscle relaxer, so it gives me heartburn.

I found the absolute magic pill for my arthritus pain, mobic, now I must tell you, don't take it. DON'T TAKE IT! IT ABSOLUTLY ATE MY GUTS ALIVE. It
s all I can think of.. People nentioned to me, my gosh, you are getting around so well, I bragged to them, yes, it's the mobic, then I started getting sick, it's the only thing that's different,a nd I've never been sicker in my life. I have an endoscopy scheduled for next Monday and an ultra sound for my gall bladder scheduled for next friday, a colonoscopy will follow shortly, as I am leaking blood somewhere and an ulcer is suspected. Gerd has not been mentioned, but I have had constant nausea without the vomiting, just a feeling of over all yuckiness. I could live without it, trust me. Anyone else feel like this? No stamina, dizziness, a shower is a lot of work, please tell me I am not the only one who feels this way.

When I quit taking vioxx last spring, money problems, I took otc naproxen sodium(aleve), it worked pretty well. My RA doc then put me on 500mg Rx naproxen TID with nexium. It tore my stomach up. I was throwing up several times a week. He switched me to prilosec and added Carafate (generic-sucralfate). Carafate is a stomach coater and you take it one hour before you eat 3 times a day. It was a royal pain to get use to, remembering to take before dinner is done, but it is worth it. And it has helped me lose a much needed 40 pounds. I just recently switched to clinoral (sulindac) which is easier on my stomach but I will continue on the carafate, just in case and until I lose another 60 pounds. Good luck, Bobbie
