Is a heriditary fused vertabrae in cervical spine Ankylosing Spondylitis??

Hi,

Following a visit with neck/head/shoulder pain to a chiropractor in 2001 he told me upon checking the X-Rays that I had a fused vertrabrae in my Cervical Spine (neck). Genetic, my mother has it as well.

I also had this investigated a couple of years back with my GP who had an X-Ray done to confirm the same. I was given Mobic and Amitriptiline for the pain and I assume inflammation.

My sister who has been complaining of similar symptoms has recently been diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Am I right to assume that this is what I have officially as well, only with my doctor explaining my condition in layman's terms?

I've determined that Ankylosing basically means 'fusing' and Spondylitis 'inflammation'

Re: Is a heriditary fused vertabrae in cervical spine Ankylosing Spondylitis??

Hi Glenzo,

It is best if you get a blood test done and have it confirmed with a rhuemy. I have AS but it is a spin off from having HLA B27 spondyloarthropathy. An xray picked up the AS when I had an asthma attack at the hospital. These forms of arthritis are all hereditary. My daughter didnt get the gene but my son has but isnt affected by it so far (touch wood). The pain was pretty bad til I started on the methatrexate and now i have free movement limited as it will be as my thoracic /cervical spine is fused but it is alot better.

Good luck.
Olivia
