Does stiffness and visable swelling always occur with RA? - Arthritis Message Board

My rheumatologist is saying that I either have RA or Lupus. My question is that my pain is not necessarily "stiffness", I describe it more as "soreness/achiness" and I have no visable swelling of joints-would this still be considered RA?

Hi,

I have had RA for several years and my symptoms are mostly swelling and pain with my hands and feet that actually turn red. Everyone is different
with what they present as far as symptoms, I also have alot of fatique with the disease. Mine is pretty advanced because I have throughtout my body including the spine which is really painful. One really good way to diagnosis RA is an mri of the hands, some doctors rely only on blood tests but many patients will have a negative ra test and actually have the disease, you might want to suggest this test to your doc and she what he/she says. There are many really good medications for RA and more coming on the market.
I take enbrel along with methotrexate and folic acid. I hope you get a diagnosis soon so you will be given the proper medication and get some relief.

I have severe pain without swelling. My rheumatologist says I'm "atypical" but believes I have RA based on my pain and the highly elevated RF, Anti-CCP, CRP, and ESR. I also experience stiffness, especially in the mornings or anytime I haven't moved the joints for an extended period of time. It almost feels like my joints are wrapped in tape and it's difficult to move them. My fatigue has dramatically improved since I started taking Plaquenil.

Have you had any blood tests, x-rays, or MRIs?
