Hip/thigh pain

This is kinda like willowthewisp's question.
I've had pain that starts around my right hip/leg, in the front of my thigh area. The pain will shoot down into my knee and sometimes my ankle. I've had this for years and it usually occurs 1-2 times a year for a few days at a time. This last time lasted well over a week and it's now starting up again! Seems the big changes in weather don't help. It aches to sit too long, lay too long, walk too long. It does get to a point that I cannot walk without limping and feeling a knife stabbing pain. It's a constant ache 24/7 for days on end. Eventually it will go away. Anyone had something similar? Thanks.

Re: Hip/thigh pain

If the pain is in the groin I would bet it is hip arthritis. I have heard that you can get pains down your thigh from the hip. There is always the possibilty of a back problem but I don't think any back problem shows up as groin pain. You need to have your hip x-rayed to be sure. If it is osteoarthritis it will probably get worse. I have osteoarthritis with groin pain but I also get shooting pains down the outside of my thigh to the knee. It is all caused by the hip arthritis , no back problems. Hopefully yours will go away for another year.
Good luck to you.

Re: Hip/thigh pain

Oooh I hate to even say this but it does sound like your hips. They told me when the pain hit my groin area it was time for surgery. I haven't had the surgery but it gets worse and I can hardly walk or even get comfortable in bed now.
I sorta bunch up a huge comforter and push my legs onto it to try and get comfty at night. I am in my second year of pain but this year is the worst.
Funny thing, sometimes it rains (i live in Fl) and the pain isn't so bad and then a nice sunny day and I am like hurting big time. I get pain in my thighs and down the front bone of my leg also. The Doc said it was the arthritis.
Get an x-ray it will tell you. I wish you well and hope it isn't but.....

Re: Hip/thigh pain

CaringMom -

I had that shooting pain in my thigh when I was 14-15 years old. That shooting pain cause me to limp. I was diagnose with Ankylosing Spondylitis. Ask your doctor to have a blood test for that. If you can touch your toes while standing - chances are you may not have AS.

The other problem you may have is osteoarthritis in your hips.

Both are serious problems - try not to put too much weight on your hips by carrying heavy objects etc.

I have both AS and osteoarthritis and it's not a pleasant thing to have.

Re: Hip/thigh pain

Thank you all for replying. Yea, I was afraid of the big "A" word, but relieved too. Knowing that others have this. My pain is mostly down the middle of my thigh to the outside of it, not the inner area or my groin area. Arthritis does run in the family, my grandmothers and my sister. Not to a crippling stage, but I think most people end up with it to a degree. Will definitely get it checked out at my next physicial.
Thanks again! Wishing you all pain free days!

Re: Hip/thigh pain

I went to my Dr. complaining of the same problem...hip pain that goes down to my knee and sometimes down to my ankle. After a number of x-rays, I was told it was just bursitis....have they mentioned that to you too? My pain will come in waves....it will bother me for a few days to a week or so, then maybe not again for a few days or weeks. I have trouble sleeping on that side as well as it starts the pain up at night and then it is hard to sleep. Can't stand for long periods of time either. I have been told I do have Osteoarthritis in my back, but they keep telling me I don't have it in my hip.

Re: Hip/thigh pain

Hi Caring Mum,

I am sorry to hear of your pain. I too get the pain in my leg like someone is twisting it against itself that lasts for up to three days and while it is there it is hell to live with. It goes from my upper thigh down into my knee then radiates into my ankle sometimes via the shin bone or even the calf muscle. At first I was getting it only 1-3 times a year but now I find it is more like 6 times a year even with the new medications. When it comes I cant sleep sit walk stand without pain and I cry alot. Im not good at taking medicines so I normally suffer it but last time I gave in and took paracetamol every four hours and it was so much better and went away in no time. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and I have humira injections every fortnight and am now on prednisone 7.5mg daily. The only thing I could possibly suggest is to get a diagnosis from your specialist because it can be sciatica can be bursitis can be arthritis and any sort of arthritis there a many to choose from. Until they give you a diagnosis it is hard to know what to do. I love hot baths or showers when I get the pain.
Good luck
Kind regards
Olivia

Re: Hip/thigh pain

I'll have to keep an eye on this thread.... as I have hip aches also. In both sides but more so in the left side and feels like its inside my hip.

Doctor thinks it could be Osteoarthritis... recommended exercising more to strenghten up hip/groin muscles.

Funny thing is...I'm on my feet walking, climbing up/down platforms & up/down stairs all day long at work. Sometimes - I've put in a full 7.5-11.5 hour day and I'm exausted and don't feel like exercising when I get home.

I think I'll start doing some situps and stretching...

I'm 39, healthy, don't smoke, low blood pressure...get lots of exercise (laugh - at work that is), take multivitamens everyday... Any suggestions on vitamens/pills to take? I've heard that Glucosamine & Chondroitin Sulfate
can help?

i have been seeing a headache and pain center for arthritis in my hips and lower back and two buldging disks. My mom asked the doctor if walking will help my hips and he said no exercise will help athritis in the hips. I have pain shoot down my inner thighs and on top of my thighs and my sides of my legs and pain shoot down from my lower back down each side to my feet in the backs of my legs. I recieved epidural nerve blocks for my lower back and had three and each time it made the pain worse so we focused on my hips pain and i got injections in both of my hip joints which i got almost imediate relief from my hips pain but still had sciatica pain in both legs and still had pain in my lower back. IT has been a week or so since the hip joint injections and there are storms comeing and i am in pain again.. I would not recommend walking for exercise for your hips arthritis because id think it would put more wear and tear on your hip joints and make the disease progress more rapidly.
