neck problems

can anyone suggest the type of doctor i should go to for chronic neck problems - pain, tightness, stiffness? i'd go to my family doctor but i'm sure he would send me elsewhere. just trying to avoid another "co-payment". thanks in advance.

Re: neck problems

I have had just the same problem for about 6 months. I also get a horrible noise of the bones clicking when I turn my head. I am never without pain. Wakes me up in the night. I can only lie on one side but obviously turn over in my sleep. I went to the doctor and he recommended physio. Have so far had about 7 sessions - lots of hard massage (ouch!), ultra sound and laser treatment. Not the slightest bit better unfortunately. I am not sure what to do next. I am 51 and life is pretty miserable with this. I wake up every morning and hope it has gone. Cannot see it ever going. I can only think it is arthritis - and that never gets better does it?

Sorry I cant be more help - it's annoying when people just answer and say "I've got that too"!

Any one with arthritis of the neck? Does this sound like it?

Re: neck problems

Hi, I do have arthritis of the neck. It took quite a few years of going thru pain and headaches before I found a Doc who had me get an x-ray of the neck, which of course showed arthritis. My neck would crack and make terrible noises when I turned it and also, I could only sleep on one side. I would wake up with terrible headaches everyday, actually, I still do. I also have fibromyalgia, so we are trying different meds to alleviate the pain. The only thing that seems to work for the neck is ibuprofen 800 mg, and muscle relaxers. I went to physical therapy, but it only made it worse. I go to my regular GP doctor, and a pain management doctor. I had blood tests for arthritis for years which came back negative so no one ever did anything for me until I found my doc that I have now, I love him for listening and not being afraid to send me for different tests. No, I don't think there is a cure for arthritis, only things that can alleviate its pain. I walk 5 miles a day and do a lot of stretching.

Ask you doc to have an x-ray taken of the neck, no need to go to a specialist and pay mor co-pays.

Re: neck problems

sounds like we are ALL in the same boat. my neck "grinds" when i move it, and i do get headaches, but not that often (thank goodness). when i get a bad headache i take a migraine prescription medication and that takes care of it. as for other aches and pains (chronic back problems), i can't go a day without at least 2 ultracet, usually i take them before bedtime.

what bother me most is the fact that it is ALWAYS there.....never complete relief!!!!! gets on my nerves actually.

i was going to call my orthopedic dr. (had rotator cuff surgery last year) as my other shoulder is bothering me as well. i'm a server (waittress) and it is hard on my body at 62!!!!! can't afford to quit, but i only work 3 nights/week. i'm afraid my other shoulder is giving out and i thought i might talk to him about the neck problems.

oh well....no fun getting older

thanks for replying and my best wishes for you to feel better real soon.

Re: neck problems

Are you sure you don't have some type of herniated neck disk problems?
Pinched nerves?

I had horrible pain, walked around looking like quasi moto.

Got neck fusion and now I'm good as new.
