Re: a question regarding psoriatic arthritis

Hi

I have had psoriatic arthritis for 5 years and have never been told there are various types! Just that I have psoritatic arthritis. It affects my elbows, wrists, fingers, knees, ankles and toes. My spine is painful at times and the joints dont hurt all at the same time, at moment my ankles are incredibly painful and my knees swollen, my elbows and wrists are not too bad, but next week it could be the other way round. I was told psoriatic arthritis is usually contracted after have psoriassis badly and when the skin disease abates it hits the joints, which is what happened to me.

I to suffer from psoriatic arthritis but was never told there were five kinds. Isn't it enought that there is one. After some reading I find that there are many others suffering the same fate I suffer. The funny thing is, I have never suffered from psoriassis very bad but from what's been explained to me you can have the skin disease or not at all and still suffer from the arthritic form. If psoriassis runs in your family you become vulnerable to getting any possible form yourself and this includes psoriatic arthritis. My Mother suffered terribly from psoriassis but never suffered from the arthritic form much and when I turned forty I began a lousey track downward, health wise that is. My psoriatic arthritis became symtomatic and I began my desperate journey to get ride of what ever I had. This was to no avail of course and I have since became accepting of my fate. Pain is just going to be a significant part of my life from now on and I am going to have to deal with it. Good Luck and Blessing to you and your family.

Re: a question regarding psoriatic arthritis

I've had psoriatic arthritis for about 10 years now, it's 6 years since I've known what it actually was. I've seen countless doctors and specialists and I've never been told that there is more than one type. There are many types of Arthritis ... perhaps that is what you meant? I have been told by many docs that it is considered the most painful type.
Now the good news ... ENBREL !!! I tried a bunch of other drugs over the years to try control this disease with no luck ... but Enbrel is literally a miracle drug. I never really had psoriasis that I am aware of for certain so I can't say what it does for that part of it. My problem is that I took so long to be diagnosed and alot of damage has been done (couple surgeries req.) so I continue to live in much pain and am still limited to what I can do in life. But if you can get this drug into you before the damage is done you may go on to live a completely normal life from there on. I've been using Enbrel for a little over 2 years now ... I guess we'll see how long it keeps working.
So DrGothican, don't just accept to live with it ... keep plugging on ... ask your doc about Enbrel ! It is expensive at about $1500 per month here so you'll likely need some kind of drug plan (assistance) to able to try it. You should know in a month or two whether it is working for you. I would have paid 10 x that if it would have helped me in the beginning ... I'd still be living my life to the fullest now.
good luck !!

Re: a question regarding psoriatic arthritis

rheumys typically won't tell youm what kind you have. they say you have psoriatic arthritis and then med you up according to your severity. if you really want to know look psoriatic arthritis up on the internet and review the symptoms. there are 5 different levels of psa and the worst will do a number on your fingers. you may have back involvement, it could be asystemic or systemic. psa can effect your organs such as you eyes or your lungs. its fairly easy to determine on your own where you fall. I am asystemic with back involvement. fun stuff!!!
