Pain in my hand

I have developed this pain in my right hand. It comes and goes but is mainly in the morning when I wake up. Sometimes it wakes me up. The pain is on top of my hand and radiates to my wrist. Sometimes when I am using my hand it goes stiff and I have to shake it to make the feeling go away. Could this be the beginnings of arthritis? I am 32 years old.

Re: Pain in my hand

Hi. I have pain in my left hand and wrist. The MRI showed Osteoarthritis and I take Celebrex for the pain. It usually helps. My pain is at its worst in the morning too. I'm sorry you're suffering too. To me, it does sound like arthritis. I hope you find some pain relief soon. Hugs, Sue

Re: Pain in my hand

Arthritis can strike at any age. I have it in the fingers of my right hand, also hard bony lumps on my fingers, I also get it in my large toes.
Whatever you do keep exercising your fingers, see your Dr for the correct treatment earlier rather than later. Do you get any burning sensation with the pain, I do. I cannot take Anti-Inflammatories as I have had an ulcer. I believe Manuka Honey is helpful.
Good Luck. Solofelix.

Re: Pain in my hand

I have tenosynovitis, which causes severe pain in my hand. I wonder if that's what you have. The main test for it is to tuck your thumb in & make a fist. If that hurts, it may well be tenosynovitis.

It's very painful, my pain meds don't touch it.

I'm going to ask my PM doc for small cortisone shot.

Re: Pain in my hand

Hi, I'm Jenny and a regular here. I have body wide tendinitis as well as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

What you are describing on the back of the hand is tendinitis of the hand(what Sassy described is tendinitis of the thumb). There is a place on the back of the hand where all the finger tendons come together, just below the wrist and that is where it hurts the most. But that stiffness is the tendons not wanting to stretch and the pain is the tendons stretching and getting more inflamed.

If you can, don't use your hand and use lots of heat on the back of your hand, that might relieve it. But a shot of cortisone in the area where the tendons all come together will relieve it quite nicely. See your doc and see if he/she will do it for you. Otherwise, you can see an arthritis specialist(rheumatologist) or a hand orthopedic surgeon and either will do it.

Had it done several times in both hands and it works well.

hugs...........Jenny

Re: Pain in my hand

Hi Jenny,
I see you know something about Arthritis. Can you or anyone else tell me if inflammation in Arthritis can cause the burning/hot sensation that I get in my fingers and large toes. Also when the pain is bad in my toes, they can go into a spasm or a locking sensation which is agony and I have to stop if I'm walking until they unlock (if you know what I mean). Thanks for any advice. Solofelix.

Re: Pain in my hand

The hot burning feeling is usually a nerve problem and I'd suspect you have "peripheral neuropathy". That is where the nerve endings in the ends of the limbs(fingers and toes) get inflamed and cause that sensation and the associated spasms of the tendons. The nerves are damaged, usually by something like diabetes or other diseases or even drugs that you take.

Not much helps, unfortunately but you can get some medications that can help with the pain and if it is diabetes, get that well under control. but once damaged, it's hard to undo the damage. I have it from damage to my neck that damaged nerves all the way down to my toes.

Check with your doctor but that would be my guess. Arthritis usually aches, not burns, but you can get rheumatoid arthritis that has heat but not the spasms and it's all over the place. When it's just fingers and toes, it's usually peripheral neuropathy.

Jenny

Re: Pain in my hand

Thank you for your advice.
I'm not Diabetic, have been tested for that. Only drugs I use are Inhalers for Asthma, no other medication. Two years ago I had a Frozen Shoulder an MRI scan revealed wear/tear Arthritis in that shoulder. I'm wondering if the same could happen in the fingers and toes as both get a fair bit of use. Had an XRAY of my fingers a week ago. Am due any time now to go and find out the results. Solofelix.
