Arthritis in Hand - Trigger Thumb Wrong Diagnosis?

I'm thinking my diagnosis is bogus!

I've been referred to an Orthopedic doctor for tomorrow a.m. My right thumb area (all of it) has hurt for 2 months now where I cannot use it. It's mainly in the mornings and evenings. I cannot turn a lamp off using my right hand, squeeze it to use nail clippers...basically anything where I have to use my right thumb. The thumb also locks into place and it's very painful to unlock it.

X-rays were done on my right thumb and also on my left thumb to do a comparison. I was shocked and think they screwed up the x-rays. They say my right thumb shows there's nothing wrong. The left thumb (my good one) shows degenerative arthritis and on-set osteoarthritis! This is ridiculous!

I'll go ahead to the appointment and tell them my concerns, but I'd like anyone's opinion.... I've already had CTS surgery on my right hand.. and I basically want something to ease the pain when it flares up. Going to an ortho dr. sounds like a waste of time.... Just give me something to keep the arthritis (in my RIGHT hand) under control. Thank you to anyone who can give me insight on this. Sandy

Re: Arthritis in Hand - Trigger Thumb Wrong Diagnosis?

My sympathies are with you. I too have had increasing pain in my right thumb for the last 3 weeks and, over the last few days, the top joint has started twanging. It snaps when I bend it towards the palm and again when I straighten it. There is a pea sized nodule on that joint that I first noticed a few months ago. I have been taking anti-inflamatories and rubbing the whole thumb with an anti-arthritis gel. Both help but it is continuing to worsen. I made an appointment today to see an orthopedic specialist this Friday.
I am 68 so I guess this is old age setting in.

Re: Arthritis in Hand - Trigger Thumb Wrong Diagnosis?

The visit to the specialist was not very helpful. He pulled the thumb around quite a bit and that aggravated it. He prescriber 100mg Celebrex caps once a day. After a few days it continues to get worse despite taking care not to use it. I have increased the caps to twice a day and they irritate my stomach so that seems no good. I also tried a splint but that made it more painful. I guess the next thing is a steroid injection. This is no fun!
How is your situation Leapyear?

Re: Arthritis in Hand - Trigger Thumb Wrong Diagnosis?

Hey, Brian! When I went in I told them the main pain, etc. was in my right hand, not the left. The doctor gave me a cortisone shot in the thumb area, and it hasn't hurt since! The first shot (pain killer for the main shot) hurt the most. But it deadened the area for the cortisone shot, which I didn't feel. It was all over pretty quick and it was well worth it! I asked him if it was just a quick fix. He said, maybe not, that it might just take care of the problem. So, I'd suggest it for you. I'm really glad with the results. Other than that, we're facing Hurricane Ike right now in southeast TX, coming tomorrow night. That sure won't be any fun! Take care, and thank you for writing! Sandy
