Fingers bent and swollen

My mother's fingers in the last couple of weeks have really looked bad. Her pointing finger and her thumb on her right hand are swollen and severely bent. It came up so quickly. She went to her doctor who didn't x-ray them or take any bloodwork, but just gave her an Rx of Celebrex. I'm worried that this is more than just osteo arthritis. Anyone have any idea what it could be? Thanks!

Re: Fingers bent and swollen

I'd suggest you get a second opinion with a Rheumatologist.

As soon as is physically possible get finger splints for her to wear at night or those contractures (bent joints) could become permanent.

Really, a Celebrex script and that's it? No x-ray? He should've done an x-ray just to look for fracture if nothing else, yeesh!

You know Celebrex (a COX 2 inhibitor) shouldn't be taken by anyone with anykind of cardiovascular problem?

Re: Fingers bent and swollen

I did get an appointment w/ a rheumatologist for tomorrow. Thanks for the tip on the finger splints. Her fingers are so bent I'm concerned that they won't go back to normal. The pointing finger is bent about 40 degrees towards her thumb and her thumb is bent towards her finger. She can't pick up anything with her hand. My mom has high blood pressure and high cholesterol but I don't think she has any other heart condition.

What really concerns me is how fast her fingers got this way. I don't know anything about rheumatoid arthritis and how to tell the difference between osteo arthritis as far as looking at her fingers. I'm thinking also maybe it's gout? I have osteo arthritis but nothing like my mom's fingers.

Thanks for your input!
